Id Explains Lack Of Deathmatch In Rage Multiplayer

by Matt Helgeson on Oct 10, 2011 at 10:10 AM

Since the days of Doom and Quake, id Software has been a pioneer in the realm of online shooter multiplayer -- essentially inventing many of the modern modes of online FPS, including deathmatching. So, why doesn't its new epic Rage have deathmatch -- or any other kind of competitive shooter multiplayer? Recently, id's Tim Willits explained the decision.

In an interview with Kotaku, Willits says that Rage was always intended to stand apart from the rest of id's games. "We have always said we wanted to do something different with Rage," Tim Willits, id Software creative director, told Kotaku. "We didn't want Rage to follow the same pattern of our other titles; we wanted it to be unique amongst our IPs."

He continued, "The easy path would have been to create a classic deathmatch game but if no one takes risks anymore the entire industry will begin to get stagnate. I think gamers are quite shrewd these days and appreciate developers trying to explore new game types that aren't done in every other title they release."

According to Willits, gamers are enjoying Rage's multiplayer, which is limited to vehicular combat and the co-op mode. Are you satisfied with that or would you have preferred a more traditional competitive shooter mode in Rage?
