Dark Souls Limited Edition Is Even More Limited Than Expected

by Phil Kollar on Oct 04, 2011 at 11:31 AM

Rather than charge extra for a special edition, Namco Bandai decided that anyone who pre-ordered Dark Souls at participating retailers would get their copies automatically upgraded to the Limited Edition, which features nicer packaging, an art book, and some digital extra. At least, that was how it was supposed to work.

Now Co-Optimus is reporting that many gamers who were looking forward to this Limited Edition may be in for a disappointment. Apparently online retailer New Egg will not be receiving any copies of the Limited Edition as expected. Other retailers such as Best Buy may be restricted to regular editions as well or may have a very small number of Limited Editions.

It's unclear what exactly went wrong or where the miscommunication was, but it's strange for multiple retailers to have been offering something that it turns out they shouldn't have been. On the plus side, it sounds like New Egg and Best Buy will be giving $20 gift certificates to players who pre-ordered expecting the Limited Edition and won't get it.

Perhaps Namco Bandai arranged for this to happen to get players in the mood for the frustration and pain they're sure to feel while playing Dark Souls?
