PSVita 3G Downloads Will be Capped At 20 Megabytes

by Matt Helgeson on Sep 30, 2011 at 09:33 AM

If you were considering buying the more expensive 3G-enabled model of the Vita with the intention of buying retail games on the go, you might want to rethink those plans.

In an article posted on the Japanese site ASCII (translated by Andriasang), a Sony representative stated that 20 megabyte cap will be put on downloads conducted through a 3G network. This is common in the mobile market  Apple imposes a 20MB file size limit on 3G downloads for iPhone and iPad. Apple's iOS devices and Android both support larger file sizes, but those bigger downloads require a Wi-Fi connection.

So, downloaded on the go will likely be limited to things like music and small-scale casual games that are typical of the mobile game market.

3G connections, which often suffer from significant packet loss and bursts of latency, are also likely unsuited for multiplayer gaming in many genres, especially fighting and shooters.

The 3G-enabled Vita model will retail for $299.99, while the Wi-Fi only model is $249.99.
