Wada: Final Fantasy XIV “Greatly Damaged” Franchise’s Brand

During a Square Enix press conference today CEO Yoichi Wada addressed the shortcomings of the company’s poorly received MMO, Final Fantasy XIV.

“The Final Fantasy brand has been greatly damaged," said Wada regarding Final Fantasy XIV.

Since the game’s release in September 2011, the company has been trying to fix problems with the game. The title had problems right out of the gate, including crashes and subpar performance.

"We'll continue with our reform work, which basically amounts to fully redoing the game, and hope to revive the FFXIV that should have been released,” Wada explained. There’s still no word on the delayed PlayStation 3 version of the game.

  • Yeah, Crystal Chronicals doesn't help, either. On the bright side, chocobo mounts. Too bad no one will use them.
  • Oh yes. This game did do damage. A 80$ damage to my wallet. FF14 was a terrible way to be introduced to MMOs.
  • LOLOLOL. Square, you really are in a WORLD OF SH** if you honestly think FF14 was the beginning of yur decent toward rock bottom. shall I make a list starting from FF10-2? you sold yurself out the day you decided to merge with enix. you will never be the legendary company i once knew.
  • Final Fantasy XIII damaged the brand. XIV just came in for a second blow.
  • Wasn't a big fan before, now FF is dead to me.

  • SquareEnix just got hit with 9999dmg!
  • wasn't just 14! 13's linear no npc chatting lack of loot didn't help it there WADA!!!

  • Well I tried to beta test this game, but I never got it to work. So since then, I have been waiting ever so patiently to get a PS3 release of it, whenever that will be...
  • lol @ the comments.

I agree though, don't think this was anywhere near the beginning of their problems.

  • "Since the game’s release in September 2011"

    Close! Try again.

  • um...duh!
  • I never cared for MMOs so I never played XI and XIV. All of the other core games are great. Their upcoming projects, Type-0, XIII-2, Versus XIII, Kingdom Hearts 3D, and even Theaterythmn, are looking really good.
  • I remember Pax 2010... we went to the Final Fantasy preview, waited in line forever, laughed at Dues Ex (which crashed) and generally thought "get on with FFXIV!". Played the demo, created our characters, etc. Then FFXIV came out and we got into the beta and couldn't even launch it, much less play it. The "release" wasn't any better. Then Dues Ex came out and was awesome. WTF happened there? Crazy how things work out.
  • Perfect time for a comeback.
  • "Since the game’s release in September 2011, " 2010 you mean

  • hey now final fantasy as a brand is still fantastic. The two mmos one being ok and the other being awful are not enough to take the crown off of the 16 bit masterpeices and some of the ps1 titles. Actually all of the nonmmo games were at least great. I always look forward to the next final fantasy game. And on the square enix mmo subject i cant wait for dragon quest x
  • If this was reworked and released on the PS3, I would consider it.
  • It was definitely damaged by atleast FFXIII, and the miscarried release of FFXIV cemented that Square Enix needs to get it's priorities re-aligned for it's Final Fantasy Franchise. I understand the need to change things up, but try to keep your feet on the ground SE.

  • I play FFXI and FFXIV. FFXI is still going strong after 8 years of online service with a population of over 2 million. Not sure how many people are playing FFXIV, but I still see a lot of people playing. Since it's release Square Enix has made A LOT of positive changes to the game and I do enjoy the game. Not as much as FFXI, but considering the game has been out for a year now and Square Enix still hasn't charged me one penny. So I'm not complaining. At least the company is doing everything it can to improve the FFXIV game play and it's mechanics, before they start charging a monthly fee.
  • i hope tht the ps3 version will be good i wanted try final fantasy online sort of
