Irrational Reveals Its Canceled RPG/RTS Dungeon Duel

by Matt Helgeson on Sep 22, 2011 at 04:07 PM

In the days before BioShock, Irrational Games worked on an intriguing role-playing/real-time strategy hybrid titled Dungeon Duel. Today, on its official site, Irrational showed off some newly discovered concept art and design materials from the project.

According to Irrational, Dungeon Duel was in development in 2002. The initial pitch document described the game like this: “Dungeon Duel combines fast-paced RTS strategy with the addictiveness of card game trading in a unique fantasy setting–a true RTS game built specifically with consoles and their controllers in mind.”

While the game never made it to development, Irrational's technical director Chris Kline found some materials on the game in some old email attachments. If you want all the available information and assets on Dungeon Duel, click this link to download an extensive PDF document on the game.

It definitely sounds like an interesting concept.
