Playing Dark Souls Early? From Software Will Hunt You Down

by Phil Kollar on Sep 21, 2011 at 03:10 PM

And now for a story you can file under "Boy, they sure know their audience, don't they?" Dark Souls, the follow-up to the beloved but difficult Demon's Souls, comes out this week in Japan. However, a few lucky gamers have placed hands on the game early...but From Software is fighting back.

Edge says that Japanese sources are reporting that those playing the game ahead of its street date are finding their game invaded by extremely overpowered Black Phantom characters. One of these PvP opponents was documented as being at level 145 with a maxed out 99 in every stat in the game. For comparison's sake, I've been playing the game for review and am in the mid-50s after 50 hours of playing. A level 145 character would destroy me without even thinking about it, even without the maxed stats.

If you've never played Demon's Souls, you may look at this as an unnecessarily cruel punishment, but for us twisted fans of this game, punishment is what we crave. Part of the fun of the Souls games has always been worrying about PvP invasions, so it makes perfect sense that From Software would give early players something extra to fret over.

For what it's worth, Namco Bandai has not officially confirmed these reports as accurate, but I'd be more surprised to find out that From isn't doing this.
