Report: 360 Getting Cable TV Later This Fall?

by Matt Miller on Sep 20, 2011 at 08:20 AM

Microsoft may be in talks with cable companies to transform the 360 gaming console into a cable box.

The news comes via a post at Digiday that went up yesterday, which cites multiple unnamed sources regarding conversations that the media giant is having with both Comcast and Verizon FiOS. The same reports indicate that the potential partnership would offer Xbox Live users the ability to access cable services without installing a separate cable box.

Timing on the potential deals remains in flux, but one source indicated to Digiday that the new company relationships might be "imminent." The news comes in the wake of significant buzz about Microsoft expanding its Live TV options, both at E3 this year, and more recently a financial analyst meeting earlier this month.

If the deal is as far along as it seems, it could be a potential windfall for both Microsoft and its cable partners. Microsoft gets more 360 users. Cable companies get more watchers without the expense of loaning out cable boxes or sending installers.

Will that win/win extend to consumers as well? Time will tell.
