Cataclysm's Last Patch Takes Players To The End Of The World Of Warcraft

We've known for a while now that the next content patch for World of Warcraft, patch 4.3, will be the final major update for the Cataclysm expansion, finally adding the Deathwing raid battle that the whole expansion has been building up to. Now Blizzard has provided us a bunch of screenshots from the update along with some surprising info about the ends of time and space that this patch will take players to.

In addition to the Deathwing raid, patch 4.3 -- now officially named "Dragon Soul" -- will introduce three new five-player dungeons. Like with Wrath of the Lich King's dungeons that built up to Icecrown Citadel, these five-player adventures will help set the scene for the expansion's final encounter. Unlike last time, though, these dungeons will take place in wildly different locations and time periods thanks to the Caverns of Time.

In addition to a trip to the Well of Eternity in Azeroth's past, players will also embark on a shocking journey to the planet's future, where they'll witness a vision of what's going to happen if Deathwing isn't stopped (see the screen above if you didn't already guess how dire things are looking).

Curiously, the final battle will begin at Wyrmrest Temple, a location from the last expansion. The Dragon Aspects -- or the four of them who aren't crazy, at least -- will gather together to help you fight against their rogue brethren. Throughout the raid, players will be able to call upon the powers of the Dragon Aspects to help, but they can only be used a limited number of times, so you'll need to choose wisely.

Also of importance is that this patch will introduce the new raid finder feature, which will match up players looking for partners to experience the Deathwing battle. Blizzard confirmed to Game Informer that using the raid finder will create a unique, lower-difficulty version of the raid, which will also have less attractive loot drops. However, it will give virtually every player the opportunity to see and play through this raid content, even if they don't have a top-ranking guild or generally prefer lone-wolfing through the game. Blizzard told us that it's still unclear if the raid finder will support older raids when it launches, since the developer will need to manually tweak difficulty settings on each raid individually.

Blizzard is expecting patch 4.3 to be available on World of Warcraft's public testing servers within the next few weeks, which means it will likely go live shortly after that. In the mean time, check out the screenshots below for a first taste at your final showdown with Deathwing.

  • Cool. Now if only World of Warcraft was worth playing. (braces self for cries of blasphemy and angry messages, possibly an attack from one of Mr. T's Knight-Elf-Mohawks )
  • Still doesn't make me want to go back.. I might just watch the videos on youtube when they pop up of the final raid with Deathwing just so I can see how it ends.
  • Is it just me or does cata lack a lot of big patches? haha I remember there being a lot more when I played during the last expansions, tho I did not play alot of cata 2 months after it came out. I guess the fact I stopped playing effects that for me.
  • Is this finally the end of World of Warcraft (big content releases, etc)? If so, thats several years leading up to this, dang :\. Betting that the final battle is going to epic though, the dragon looks bad***
  • Nice, can't wait to play this and get my own private server up just to get all the cool *** I wanted and never could be assed to get.. Still, retail will be interesting, and seems like they're rushing with this expansion to get to the next one, considering there wasn't a lot of end-game content - mainly old-world renewed content.. whatever the new expansion is, it has to have a intwined storyline with Cata to follow the Hour of Twilight.

  • World of Warcraft? Lost interest in that back in 07 Itc cool that they are making a big ending for it though.
  • ive been waiting for this dragon. I ran out of stuff i wanted to do and ended my sub. Now this is here i can part with 15 dollars to play this raid

  • LEEEROOOOOOOOOOYYY.......
  • Smart inclusion for a raid finder encounter, but judging how PUGs usually end up I might seem wary. Still, great of them to include the option!
  • excuse the language, But this is bullcrap!!!,thank you Activision for destroying WOW,don't worry we will all be playing call of duty soon enough.
  • this is the end of the world.....of warcraft
  • What will Activision do once the cash-cow is bled dry? I'm guessing crack people out on a new game...
  • I'll admit the raid-finder sounds very interesting. Raiding was one aspect of the game I always wanted to get into but couldn't because I didn't feel like committing hours and hours of work just for the meager chance at some loot (I mainly just wanted to do them for the story elements).

4.3 is also gonna have transmogrification, something that I'm also excited for being an avid rp'er and collector of old armor sets and weapons.

  • You don't have to fight Deathwing, just call forth the Dragonborn and he will take care of the problem
  • There is nothing that would make me go back to playing WoW. Even if it was free. Don't get me wrong, it is an amazing game. But it takes up WAYYYYY too much time. I got hooked on it once and I'll never do that again.

  • why do people still play this? my roommate plays a ton and i get drunk and watch him and even then i cant figure out why he plays. everything about it looks mad dated and im surprised that blizzard can stand still working with such old tech.

    oh. yes. Alduin>any Blizzard dragon

  • I really wish I could play WoW.. *** limited internet! Maybe one day after WoW has passed on (Yes people, it will happen eventually) Blizzard will get super ambitious and morph it into a disc based game so I don't have to play online. It sounds crazy sure, but it seems like the kind of challenge Blizzard would be up for trying out.
  • Hopefully this means wow is coming to a close... And we can finally get a new blizzard mmo to obsess over :D and NO FREE TO PLAY MODELS
  • Hm. Raid finder, huh? I might actually start up my account for a bit to test that out. Never done a raid before.
  • Still don't have plans to return anytime soon unless TOR and GW2 flop and blizzard releases a Pandaren expansion
