Namco Details Tekken Plans At TGS

by Dan Ryckert on Sep 14, 2011 at 04:10 PM

Namco revealed plans for the Tekken series at the Tokyo Game Show, and it seems that the series will be seeing a flurry of releases. Tekken Tag Tournament 2 hit Japanese arcades this week, and we’ll be seeing the release of Tekken Hybrid, Tekken X Street Fighter, and Tekken 3D Prime Edition in the near future.

Tekken Hybrid was recently announced, and includes an HD remaster of Tekken Tag Tournament, Tekken Tag Tournament 2 Prologue, and the full-length CG movie Tekken: Blood Vengeance. Prologue will be a limited version of the arcade edition, featuring four characters (Alisa, Xiaoyu, Devil Jin, and Devil Kazuya) and several stages. It will include two-player versus play, but there will be no single-player ladder mode. All three of the package’s inclusions will be 3D-compatible, and Tag Tournament 2 will feature a 3D model viewer. It will launch this holiday exclusively for the Playstation 3.

Newly announced is Tekken 3D Prime Edition, which will arrive on 3DS next February. It features 2-player online play, and it runs at an impressive 60 frames per second even with the 3D turned all the way up. In the demo I played, the character select screen showcased 40 fighters, although none appeared to be newcomers to the series. Like in Super Street Fighter IV: 3D Edition, it will feature programmable pre-set combo buttons on the touch screen. These can be throws or standard attacks, and will give you quicker access to your favorite moves. While the camera angle occasionally tweaked beyond the standard view, it wasn’t as drastic (or annoying) as Street Fighter’s dynamic angle. Visually, the characters in the game seemed on par with recent console versions of Tekken. Like in Hybrid, the full-length Blood Vengeance film will be included on the cartridge.

Notably absent thus far at the show is Tekken X Street Fighter. We’ve seen plenty of Capcom’s Street Fighter X Tekken in recent months, but nothing yet on the Namco fighter. With one entry in the franchise arriving this fall, and another next February, we wouldn’t be surprised to see it hit next holiday season.
