Sony Still Believes In A 3D Future For PS3

Sony isn’t giving up when the going gets tough. Despite poor market reception for 3D technology, Sony believes the PlayStation 3 is only “scratching the surface” when it comes to 3D gaming.

“Looking at the future of 3D, I think we’ve really only just begun to realize its potential as a creative medium," Sony London Studios manager Mick Hocking recently told IndustryGamers. "With the combination of 3D and motion control gaming with PlayStation Move, I think titles like Resistance 3 are just scratching the surface of what’s possible.”

Hocking later added, “If you look at what PlayStation is doing now and the innovations that are being worked on in our Studios in 3D gaming, we’re living in one of the most thrilling eras to be a gamer.”

We agree that it is an exciting time to be a gamer, but given recent trends, we wonder if the 3D revolution will catch on before the PS3 is taken off the market. The 3DTV sales haven’t taken off as much as the industry's hardware giants had hoped, and Nintendo discovered that 3D gaming handhelds are not in high demand, either.

  • Newsflash Sony: The movie industry is starting to realize that 3D just isn't the future and the majority of viewers prefer the traditional 2D version. Offering the option is fine, but throwing your weight behind it and pushing the technology to an audience that isn't very receptive to it might be a bad business move. Now before I get the inevitable "I love 3D," let me state my source: http://www.slate.com/id/2264927/ Now, hate away if that is what you choose.

^Really? This, coupled with the 3Ds' poor reception...I mean, the writing is clearly on the wall, spelled out in 10 different languages...
  • Oh NOW they understand that we don't all want 3D!!!! my god open your eyes ppl god *** I will never buy anything 3D so go ahead and waste money and time that can be used for something better because it isn't going to work buddy.
  • wow a bold statement hocking "living in one of the most thrilling eras to be a gamer". how many eras have there been when being a "gamer" was a possibility? and he can't even say the most, just one of.
  • I want that PS3 tv. IT looks promising.
  • I don't mind as long as they don't force us to play everything in 3d.

  • i personally hate 3d, NO HATE, that is all

  • I really do not see a future for 3D, no matter what it's "simulated" 3D by trying to make a flat surface look 3 dimensional.  Now if they figure out how to render full 3D holograms then count me in.  Otherwise I really do not care for how 3D looks even at its best.

  • I still think that 3D is a gimmick that will die out eventually. Once everyone gets over the "It's cool" factor, it'll die.
  • Well that makes one.

  • I don't care for 3d until it won't need glasses, can see it from other angles (3ds), and it doesn't lessen the film (thor)!!!!  Until then I am not jumping in...

That been said, Sony got Bluray right and 3d is so-so... so Sony is still on a roll in my book.

  • 3D is great for visual depth and new ways to play but it seems it's falling under the same category as motion control has in that people are not willing to invest in this "gimmick" if the games and support don't justify the investment.

I personally think that 3D has the potential to offer new ways to play, but it's not going to catch on if there isn't the right support for it.

  • I have absolutely no interest in 3D.  I may eventually buy a 3DS if some good games come out for it, but I will probably turn the 3D effect off most of the time.

  • I just don't see the point in investing into 3D anything at the moment. I mean, it looks neat, but I'd rather play my games without 3D and i'd rather watch movies in 2D.

Until we get Starwars holograms, i'm not interested.

  • Really? Anyone else notice the hype for 3D die? Just like it has every decade since like the 60s.... 3D is a crap tec, holograph now that is ***...

  • I think 3D is a logical next step, I am not however on board with it. I cant see myself spending upwards of $400 for a new TV so I can play a few 3D games, until it becomes more affordable I don't think it will ever take off as hoped.

  • I think people would like 3d more if it was done properly. The problem is that instead of trying to do high quality things like Avatar, the companies decided to just do a bad conversion of the movie into 3d and likewise made bland 3d experiences. For gaming I think 3d would be cool for about 4 min until I'd turn it off. I think it'd get annoying to have everything coming at you in your face. What they should do instead is work on making better hardware so developers have more to work with.
  • 3D hasn't been successful in film industry. So, I seriously doubt it would reach the achievement in gaming industry.
