Monster Hunter 4 Announced For 3DS

Previously we heard reports that Capcom would announced Monster Hunter 3G for the 3DS at Nintendo's pre-Tokyo Game Show press conference. Those rumors came true, but Capcom also came packing another unexpected Monster Hunter announcement.

In addition to 3G, Capcom revealed the existence of Monster Hunter 4 and announced it as a 3DS title. It's currently unclear if this new entry in the popular series will be exclusive to the 3DS or available on other platforms such as the Wii U or Sony's upcoming Vita handheld. If it is exclusive, even for a short period of time, that will be a major victory for Nintendo which will surely bump the handheld's sales in Japan.

A brief trailer for Monster Hunter 4 was shown at the press conference, which featured a character running away from one of the series' trademark giant creatures. The gameplay appeared to be slightly faster, with more climbing around on the environment and eventually even jumping onto the monster's back to attack.

We've got a crew out in Tokyo for TGS this week, so we'll be scouring for any new Monster Hunter 4 details and reporting them as they pop up.

  • This should help... the only thing i have been playing on my 3ds is oot3d and the original legend of zelda.

  • Niiiiice! This is the kind of thing the 3DS needs, I personally look forward to this one.

  • ... wth
  • Better make the game import friendly
  • This could be pretty cool. Glad it will have the dual analog sticks for it should make it play pretty smooth.

  • The 3DS has won over Japan just like that.
  • Underated series with *** camera control, that is all.
  • Better come out on Vita also
  • Love this series, so I'll probably pick up a 3DS just for this

  • I've always wished that these would have seen life on the Xbox. i'd love to play them since I never have. The idea is extremely intriguing though, that's why I wanna play them.
  • Great game and great addition for the 3DS.

  • ive played monster hunter but never beaten it...i always got lost

  • For monster hunter games and some mario games, i will buy a 3DS

  • Dear Capcom,

Can I PLEASE have an HD Monster Hunter on PS3.. pretty please? I hate playing one of my favorite games with second-hand graphics. Tri was Wii only, Freedom Unite/Portable was PSP only (in America), and now 4 is on the 3DS?

Why can there never be an HD Monster Hunter game...

  • I'm getting sick of Japan's attitude of clinging to PS2-quality assets for so many game sequels. It's not just Monster Hunter at this point (seriously though; stop being lazy Capcom and do an HD one with proper online support. It's not like you'll find an audience anyway, so long after stuff like Borderlands has come out. But still; move the f*** on). Think about how much mileage Square Enix has squeezed out of the darn PS2 assets for Kingdom Hearts? How they've built at least 3 games (Chain of Memories for PS2, Birth By Sleep and the 3DS' Dream Drop Distance) without making a single new asset? Japan - SOME developers, at any rate, - are incredibly lazy. Let go of the PS2 generation already, guys! Sh*t.
  • Psyched. Definitely going to see how long I can make it before I have to resort to buying that second circle pad though :p

  • not sold on this or the 3DS still, someone give me something good.

  • What do I have to do to get this series to continue on a system I have? I have played this game on the ps2, and have played every game on the psp. But I only have a psp, a ps2, and an xbox...hell Ill trade in my xbox if they make a Monster Hunter for PS3, no joke.

  • Love the Monster Hunter series, too bad it's only for 3DS.
  • I'm getting a 3DS for Christmas, good to see there might be something worth getting on it soon. :) PS: How do you vote on the polls on GI? Seriously...
