Analyst Firm Predicts Game Sales Will Top $81 Billion In 2016

by Matt Helgeson on Sep 08, 2011 at 01:30 PM

DFC Intelligence just released a report looking into the future of the video game industry -- and it sees a lot of money.

In DFC's annual Worldwide Market Forecasts for the Video Game and Interactive Entertainment Industry report, the firm predicted that global video game sales will top $81 billion by 2016.

This number includes sales from all facets of the industry: portable and home console hardware, software (including both physical and digital sales), and mobile games for phones, tablets, and other devices.

Not surprisingly, most of the upside for the industry will be in digital and mobile sales, which are predicted to rise from $19.3 billion in 2010 to $37.9 billion in 2016. Retail sales are projected to slide slightly in the same period, from $58 billion to $43 billion.
