If you thought Dragon Quest X was just Square Enix riding the current wave of MMO trends, think again. The project has been in the works for six years, according to a former employee.

Takehko Hoashi, who has previously worked on Square Enix projects like Final Fantasy IX, Final Fantasy XIV, and Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, left the company in 2010. However, he revealed in a tweet today (which has since been removed) that Dragon Quest X has already been in development six years.

That would mean that it was developed more or less in parallel with Dragon Quest IX for DS. Considering how things went with Final Fantasy XIV, one might think Square Enix would steer clear of MMOs for a while. Apparently some investors felt the same way, as the game's announcement might be related to Square Enix stock drops.

I'll be interested to see if the backlash surrounding Dragon Quest X's announcement alters the course Square Enix decides to take with the title.
