Mass Effect Will Continue, But Shepard Won't

BioWare has always been forthcoming about the Mass Effect trilogy telling Commander Shepard's tale. But does the character have a future beyond Mass Effect 3? Short answer: Nope.

"We have ambitious plans to continue this franchise going forward," BioWare CEO Ray Muzyka told PC Gamer at Gamescom. "Mass Effect 3 is simultaneously a couple of different things; a thrilling and epic conclusion to the trilogy as we promised our fans we’d provide for Commander Shepard, but it’s also a brand new beginning – it’s an entry point for new fans and it’s also a brand new beginning.”

When PC Gamer asked if Shepard would definitely not appear in future games in the Mass Effect universe, producer Michael Gamble replied: "Correct."

With everything BioWare has invested building the Mass Effect mythology this generation, it only makes sense that the company would want to keep the franchise going. Will you still be interested when Shepard isn't in the spotlight anymore?

  • New trilogy with a new main character. Nothing wrong with that.
  • I'll miss Shepard, but it won't stop me from enjoying future games.
  • I'll still be interested. There is great depth to Mass Effects universe so I'll keep playing as long as the games are good.

  • You can fight like a Krogan, run like a leopard but it's you're last game playing as Commander Shepard.
  • Wow. I wonder if they'll go the Dragon Age route.
  • WELL of course, with so much deep story characters I only hope they keep it going. For example the mission in Mass effect 2 where you took control of the ships driver
  • Shepard has to die, or at least give us the option to end his life like in DA: Origins.
  • mass effect 2 wasnt that good
  • It is going to be tough. They've made me care a lot about the character and the name itself. But it is Bioware we are discussing. I have faith that they will give us a new character to care about.

  • Of course. With or without Shepard, i'm still going to check out whatever Bioware comes out with. Bioware eases my RPG craving :3
  • I think this would probably be a good time to read up and start playing Mass Effect for more than a half-hour. My ears and mind are open.
  • Mass Effect Episode 1

  • Sure so long as they are quality games with as good of story and depth as the first three Mass Effects have done =)
  • I wouldn't be so sure, Bioware always states something but when the fans start complaining, they do what these fellas ask. That said, I hope there is an option to keep Shepard alive, I don't want the canon ending to be his death.
  • Hmm.Am I a bad person because I don't care? The only thing videogame related I want is Skyrim... and perhaps CoD or Battlefield, and definetly Halo, and oh yeah, Assasins Creed Revelations, and also Deus Ex, and maybe Gears of War, and... I should shut up now.

Also I never really felt an emotional connection with Shepard, and I played through both ME and ME2. Honestly, I think the game is a lot of hype. ME1 wasn't much fun, ME 2 was great, but I think the universe had a "been there done that" kind of feeling.

Also I haven't been on this sight in forever... :D
  • Yes I would be interested. They are smart, unlike some franchises that get too focused on their 'main' dude. It will be good to not rely on the ole commander.

  • I would, I am happy that they won't be taking a 343 approach and continue into 6 games total of the same character. At some point being so invincible is enough to drive you mad. I'm happy my journey as Shepard will be closing, I love the series and I can't wait to see what the future of Mass Effect universe will hold... On another side note I hope they take a break and make a new KOTOR 3. Please Bioware?
  • simply put:no, my whole infactuation with the mass effect series has been about commander shepard's journey and his many feats that he must overcome,i highly doubt i will be interested in a new mass effect withOUT shepard.his whole story is what brought me in closer to the game,to not even see him as an NPC in future titles is outrageous. thank's for the dissapointing news bioware,
  • Shep will be back eventually. She just will. You don't chuck an icon.
  • Well, Mass Effect is such a massive universe beyond Commander Shepard, I don't see a problem in that. I personally would kinda like to see a shooter that takes place during the first contact war.
