Gearbox Has More Planned For Duke Nukem

by Jeff Marchiafava on Aug 30, 2011 at 01:40 PM

The less-than-stellar reception of Duke Nukem Forever probably wasn't what Gearbox was hoping for when it stepped in and saved the troubled title from certain doom. During Gearbox's panel at this year's PAX, however, CEO Randy Pitchford suggested that ensuring gamers got to play DNF wasn't the company's end goal.

Kotaku has posted a write-up of Pitchford's comments during the panel, which strongly suggest that the developer intends to work on more Duke Nukem projects in the future. "I know that you guys figured out that, when Gearbox acquired the [Duke Nukem] franchise, we didn't do it just to make sure we could all play Duke Forever, but because we wanted to make our own Duke game. Soon, we'll talk about that, but not today."

As flawed as Duke's recent outing was, we can't help but wonder what Gearbox would do with the series when it has the ability to start from scratch. Can the developer save Duke's legacy? Or is the latest game proof that he should have stayed in the past? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
