Tetris Free Debuts On Android Marketplace

by Matt Helgeson on Aug 29, 2011 at 06:47 AM

Electronic Arts has just released a new, free version of Tetris for Android mobile devices, and it's really well done.

Like most free Android games, it's ad served, but so far it doesn't seem too obnoxious – ads are skippable after a short time. I just downloaded it for my MyTouch 4G, a sold-but-not-overly-powerful Android phone, and it works great. The download took only a minute or so via a 4G connection, and I was soon wasting valuable work time on Tetris.

The touch interface is well designed. Basically, you can rotate the pieces clockwise and counter-clockwise by tapping on the left and right sides of the screen. You see a classic "ghosted" image of where the tetrino will fall at the bottom. When you're sure of your placement, just flick downward and the piece will fall into place. Based on my quick impressions, it's a very nice touch-screen implementation of a classic puzzler.

Tetris Free is available now on the Android Marketplace.
