Sonic 4: Episode 2 May Arrive In 2012

Has Sega been taking notes on the release schedule for Half-Life 2: Episode 3? The company revealed today that there is no room in 2011 for Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 2, and that the game may release next year, possibly a full year after Episode 1’s downloadable launch.

"This year, 2011, is the anniversary, so we're focusing on the celebration title," said Takashi Iizuka of Sonic Team in a conversation with Eurogamer, "But moving forward to 2012, Sonic will still be going, so I'd hope to provide Episode 2 then."

Iizuka also revealed that Sega planned all along to shelf Sonic 4 in favor of Sonic Generations to best celebrate the hedgehog’s 20th anniversary.

When asked if Sonic 4: Episode 3 was a future possibility, Iizuka simply stated that he “can’t say.” I'll admit I'm a little relieved that Sega is letting the ink dry on their love letters to fans instead of overwhelming us with tributes to Sonic's heyday.

  • Oh.  I thought it went without saying that Sonic 4 had been scrapped after the Generations announcement.  I guess I was wrong.

  • it's Sonic 4 Episode 2. lol typo

  • They're still making this? Wow, i thought they gave up!

  • Nowadays I just get bitter/angry whenever I hear someone reference another iteration of Half-Life; because of the seeming lack of fan loyalty Valve exhibits on keeping anyone informed about any progress that might be forthcoming on it. Good to hear Sonic is still alive and kicking, good for him.
  • gee, sure has taken long enough

  • and cue the sonic-hate comments. again. sigh...
  • Valve fans: Hey sonic guys, welcome to the waiting for your episode club lol

Sonic fans: Well at least we have a date for our episode

    Valve fans: FFFFFFUUUUU

  • And this is why episodic content doesn't work out for most developers. If you want to make episodes, you should be sure you're able to push out episodic content... episodically.

  • I just hope they're sticking to that fan-feedback development process they said they were doing, as well as taking some cues from the 2D Sonic levels in Generations.

  • Tails please!
  • I'm looking forward to this. If they can keep the style of Episode 1 and inject some of the gameplay elements that make the 2D sections of Generations great (at least what ive seen from the demo), then this could be great.

  • I think I want Generations more than this.

  • It's good to know it's still in the works, I was wondering if it'd been cancelled.

  • wait did he write Sonic the Hedgehog 2 episode 4 O.o
  • Honestly thought they cancelled the game and go straight for Sonic Generations. Nice to see its still going. And this along with Generations will be great.
  • So it was all one team?  I just assumed that they had a fraction of the team or another team altogether to work on them and have a reasonable 6 month gap between games... that way we all can play them and want more by the time the next episode comes out...

  • 2 episodes across 3 years? Had this been a show it'd be cancelled. Thankfully though, it isn't. Looking forward to Generations and this should add to Sega's rebuilding of the hedgehog's image moving forward.

  • dang 2010 2 2012 and 2014 wow it might take two years 4 every episode just like the expiration date 4 sonic 3 but im still looking forward 4 every sonic game that comes out and sonic generations comin nov 1st (the true release date as i mentioned last time).

  • welll I already started, but only if it's for the same systems.
