Xbox Live Is 35 Million Strong

Microsoft's Xbox Live online service is wildly popular with gamers, now boasting over 35 million users worldwide.

Microsoft Xbox Live marketing manager Robin Burrowes revealed this tidbit in an interview with Joystiq, saying, "Our audience growth is up to 35 million people globally across those 35 countries on Xbox Live itself."

He declined to specify how the 35 million figure was divided up amongst paid (Gold) members and free accounts. However, he did tell Joystiq that more of Microsoft's revenue comes from transactions (purchases of games, DLC, and other digital items) than subscription fees.

This new figure of 35 million is up five million from numbers released last year. In January of this year, Microsoft said that it's sold 50 million Xbox 360s worldwide -- so there are still 15 million users out there that haven't signed up for Xbox Live.

  • And I'm proud to be one of those 35 million people. Xbox Live is awesome.
  • It is a good service. I just recently got a good deal on it, and I enjoy playing Halo, so it's pretty good in my book.

  • and 35 million people are spending their hard earned money just to play a game online
  • xbox live should be free
  • i love LIVE.....not the price......

thankfully i use PSN when i don't have enough money to pay for LIVE
  • Own both systems but still prefer if it was free more money for games you know.

  • PSN = 77 million users
  • Good for you, Microsoft. My dusty 360 says it misses you.

I'll be heading back to PSN now.

  • I might not have gold anymore the way playstation plus sounds getting a free game each week you just have to stay as a playstation plus member and discounts for games all for $50 a year and I can play multiplayer online without paying for it sounds awsome to me. If microsoft doesn't do anything to keep people there might be more people like me.
  • Ehh, I have a LIVE account, but I switched to Steam (also 30 million plus active accounts) a long time ago.  With GFWL running at the same time as steam, I get the best of both worlds.

  • The price may suck, but at least you know you are getting your money's worth most of the time. You just can't beat Xbox Live's quality.
  • Get ready for the OMG PS3 IS 1337 AND SO MUCH BETTER THAN XBOX comments. Have fun missing out on games fanboys. Having a ps3 and an xbox 360 is awesome.
  • 4 years now. And I'm planning to hit a full DECADE!

    Long live LIVE.

Edit: Don't you just love the instant fanboy topic? This sh** gets so old.
PSN 77 millions? From like what, 50 million PS3's? Even less realistic, considering the numbers, I think you can figure this one out.

Xbox Live, let's take 50 million Xbox's and 35 million Gtags... 15 million people left. Um ok, a smarter number to brag about, since you know, it's not exact, but closer to reality.

    No fanboyism, but yes reasoning.
  • You know what would make it cooler and draw in more customers? MAKING IT FREE!!!
  • That's it? Hahahaha!
  • xbox live is totaly awesome but i perfer psn cuz its free anyway congrats for microsoft

  • They charge for Live and they use their money to secure exclusives and timed-exclusive DLC; Sonybots like to point and laugh about having to pay for Live, and then complain about the way MS throws their cash around. Sorry, you can't pay for nothing and have everything.
  • You see that. 15 million Xbox 36o users are NOT connected online. Do you hear that, developers? That means that when you release a completely busted game in the hopes of fixing it in a patch later, you are ripping off a large percentage of people who may have bought your game. This also goes for games that make multiplayer a priority, and remove resources away from single player games. Absolutely everyone who buys your game can play the single player. 15 million of them can't play the multiplayer. The odds are in favor of NOT wasting time and resources on tacked on multiplayer. Do you hear me, Dead Space 2??
  • PSN is better, mainly because its free. not to mention the PS3 has way better exclusives
  • I think I'm the 35 millionth subscriber. I just subscribed for the first time two days ago.
