Live Blog: EA Gamescom Press Conference

by Andrew Reiner on Aug 16, 2011 at 03:35 AM

Electronic Arts' Gamescom press conference didn't bring any new console game announcements, but new footage of Mass Effect 3, SSX and Battlefield 3 were shown. Read on to find out what you can expect to see later today right here on gameinformer.com! (Note: The newest updates are at the bottom of the feed.)

The show is beginning. The lights have dimmed, rock music is blaring and a sizzle reel of EA's upcoming games is playing. SSX, Battlefield, The Sims Pets, FIFA, Reckoning, Need for Speed, NHL, and Mass Effect 3 are shown.

Jens Uwe Inact, EA's Senior Vice President for European Publishing is on stage. He says we'll see "10 of the best games" coming out this year.

The show is starting with a new announcement from EA Sports.

Looks like street soccer. When you can't find grass...

FIFA Street returns.

Gary Paterson and Andrew Wilson are on stage to talk about the game, which is in development at Vancouver, British Columbia.

For the first time ever the game will be made by the EA Sports football group. From the creators of FIFA.

Includes motion capture from some of the top street football players from around the world.

Uses FIFA's new impact engine and enhanced dribbling system.

You can play five-on-five and six-on-six. Built on the FIFA 12 gameplay engine. The game will feature 35 different locations.

Works with EA Season Ticket and EA Sports Football Club. Season Ticket holders will be able to get the game early.

First gameplay footage is now showing. Animation looks great. Looks to have great variety in the environment types.

Need for Speed: The Run is up next.

The trailer ended with an awesome clip of a car outrunning an avalanche.

Jack DeLong is on stage to talk about it.

The game will feature "blowing snow."

We're checking out a new level called Independence Pass. It's set in the Rocky Mountains. Speed is incredible. Falling rocks and snow looks fantastic.

It reminds me of Modern Warfare 2's snowmobile sequences.

This mountain is falling apart. Either that or yetis are throwing boulders at the racers.

This is a LONG race.

It ends with the driver races headlong into an avalanche. Zero visibility.

Dr. Ray Muzyka, co-founder of BioWare, is on stage.

He's talking about Warhammer Online: Wrath of Heroes, a new PvP game from BioWare Mythic. It's free to play. PC only.

Coming this fall.

Now up is Star Wars: The Old Republic.

"Gearing up for it to be smooth right from the start."

Gameplay footage is now showing. It's in German.

I'm pretty sure the characters on screen were arguing over today's lunch destination. Lightsabers were drawn.

A full BioWare team is on hand to show the game. First live gameplay demo. We're taking a look at something called the Eternity Vault. Gabe Amatangelo, the game's lead designer is on stage to run us through this eight-player demo.

The demo starts with escape pods launching to a hostile surface. A tauntaun was needlessly slaughtered. The tank in the group, a jedi, is getting pounded with turret laser fire. A medic is healing him from the distance.

The team is focusing on taking down the turrets. Bounty hunters are blasting away. Missile attacks, lasers...

One of the players has a double-sided purple lightsaber. I thought Mace Windu was the only character allowed to have purple? Someone get George Lucas on the line. BioWare isn't playing by the rules.

A giant annihilation droid just entered the fray. One arm swipe sends the entire team flying. The team is not doing well. Demo ending...

More Eternity Vault footage shows killer probe droids, rancor-like beasts, most players playing as Sith.

Next up is Mass Effect 3. "Bigger and more challenging than ever before."

"Mass Effect 3 is the ultimate RPG."

"This is all out galactic war," says Myuzka.

New demo has Shepard in an industrial zone with Garus.

Liara is also in this party. She will never be my lover...

The trailer/demo didn't show much. Just shooting, running... Not much else.

SSX coming next.

Showing Explore game mode in pre-alpha gameplay. You can upload ghost runs and your friends can challenge them. Awesome idea.

You'll earn money if your friend loses against your ghost, even if you are not logged in.

Global events are now being demoed. Up to 100,000 players at once. Wonder how that will work. Customizable events.

EA is also adding Ridernet. Much like Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit's Autolog, it allows players to "like" drops. It also shows you how you are stacking up against your friends.

New trailer is now playing. We're finally seeing crazy moves, like a snowboarder lying sitting on his board as he grinds.

Jens Uwe is back on stage. He just called out EA's big wigs in the crowd. He's totally getting a raise.

Ken Rolston from 38 Studios is onstage to show Kingdoms of Amalurralalau: Reckoning. He's into theatrics.

This is a "world to love and a world worth saving."

If i ever get rich, I'm going to pay this guy to read books to me.

Kingdoms of Amalurralalala: Reckoning is coming on February 7, 2012 in the United States and February 10 in Europe.

This game looks awesome. I love the art style and animation. Full of color/life.

Ragnar Tournquist from Funcom is onstage.

He's talking about the MMO Secret World. Players can join one of three secret societies. They don't sound so secret, do they.? The game will be coming out April 2012. The beta starts in nine days on August 26.

Naming my first born Ragnar Reiner. CG trailer now showing.

Getting an H.P. Lovecraft vibe from this trailer. Tentacles everywhere...

FIFA 12 is up next.

David Rutter, senior producer of FIFA, is talking about how great his team thinks the game is.

1,000,000,000 games of FIFA 11 played online. WOW...

Online Friendlies mode (hahahaha!) makes connecting with friends even easier than before.

On September 20, you can get a head start on making your FIFA Ultimate Team, which will ship on the disc this year.

Demo hitting on September 13. Ships in U.S. on September 27 and Europe on September 29.

Battlefield 3 is up next!

Karl Magnus Troedsson, general manager at DICE, and Patrick Soderlund, EVP EA Games, are onstage to talk about it.

"Battlefield 3 is the best, modern warfare experience game this year." In your face, Activision! Those words must hurt.

Talking about co-op!

Live PlayStation 3 demo of co-op in action. They timed a double kill. Patrick counted down "3, 2, 1, shoot!" The mission is to "rescue a high-value target."

The mission is set in a factory of some sort. Darkly lit...tight hallways...plenty of baddies to kill...

They found the hostage. They are escorting him out. His EA seems great. He's keeping up just fine. They now have to protect the humvee.

RPG fire lights up the night sky. Patrick is going to go grab a sniper rifle. Night vision looks amazing. Targets are highlighted in orange against the typical night vision green. Enemies are rushing. Guns ablaze.

Co-op is showing off two-player. Not sure if it is limited to just two or if more can join.

And they stopped playing. Keep going, guys!

Attendees of Gamescom can play 64-player on PC at EA's booth.

New trailer shows off vehicle action. Airplanes look amazing, fast.

The trailer is of a multiplayer map called Caspian Border. October can't come soon enough.

That's the end of the show.

Once again, the rumors of a new game announcement prove to be false.
