Codemasters Bringing F1 Racing To Facebook

by Jeff Cork on Aug 14, 2011 at 07:17 AM

Formula One enthusiasts–and we know you're out there somewhere–will be able to scream down the track via social-media giant Facebook in a few short months. Codemasters has announced that it's bringing the thrill of racing and managing a team in the first quarter of 2012. Judging from the early screens, it's not likely to offer the same hardcore sim action that the publisher's console releases have delivered, but it could be a great way for people to make a few pit stops during slow times in the office.

“Formula One is a proven major games brand that resonates with players on a global level and is recogniszed as one the biggest sports licenses in video games," says  David Solari, vice president of Codemasters Online. "As the worldwide gaming market evolves, 2012 is the perfect time to extend this series to the free-to-play market,” .
“Building on the commercial and critical success of our high-definition Formula One games, this is an exciting opportunity to bring our passion for the sport and our expertise in racing to a new audience. With a bespoke design for accessible browser play, F1 Online: The Game is a perfect complimentary experience to the HD series and will appeal to a broad spectrum of Formula One's millions of fans worldwide.”

Codemasters says that the game will include all of the official drivers, teams, and circuits from the 2011 FIA Formula World Championship. Players will also be able to create their own teams and livery, and then compete online in multiplayer races. Virtual team managers will also have to juggle responsibilities such as research and the crew.

For more on the game, visit its official Web site. Considering F1's popularity in Europe, it's almost certain that the game will have a presence at next week's Gamescom event in Germany. We'll be there, and we'll report back if there's anything particularly interesting about this one.

So there you have it. F1 Online: The Game, not to be confused with F1 Online: The Novel and F1 Online: The Tile Center.
