Battlefield 3 PC Will Require Origin Client -- Even Retail Copies

It's a bit vexing that, instead of being discussed for being what looks to be a real step forward in the military shooter genre, all talk regarding EA's Battlefield 3 seems to revolve around the company's plan to use it to push its EA Original digital distribution and social networking service.

While the game will be available both at retail and at other digital retails -- except, notably Valve's popular Steam (for more on that saga, click here) -- EA has now confirmed that players will be requiring that players install Origin on their PCs to play Battlefield 3, even if they bought a boxed copy at retail.

The news was confirmed by Battlefield community manager Daniel Matros via his Twitter account. Ironically, this tactic is something EA actually copied from Valve and Steam, which has been requiring Steam installs for its PC games since Half-Life 2.

  • Annnnnnnd EA is pushing my buttons more and more.
  • Is it just the PC versions or do you need to get a origin account for the console versions as well?
  • I see. Well, hope it doesn't ruin the experience! Also, is that the final logo? Looks different from the site color palette.
  • im going to get this for ps3 i dont care if my parents kill me
  • does this matter? is it a bad thing? people shouldn't be complaining about memory, cuz if you were then you wouldn't be getting BF3. consoles all the way baby
  • EA'S pushing this Origin thing as bit too far... most people are'nt going to replace Steam for Origin. I won't. And the whole DLC BS they're saying is just a excuse.
  • What an odd move. Also... this just in...I love Steam
  • This is no different than the Steam client required to play any game by Valve on PC, even when you buy them at retail outlets. Not that I approve but this is the same exact thing.
  • Staff

origin is PC only, consoles not affected

  • Thanks EA for forcing Origin down our throat. No one wants your exclusive service.
  • Well that isn't too bad, seeing how Valve does the same thing. But I'll most likely be getting a retail version anyways, and I already have Origin installed, so it doesn't bother me.
  • yay more useless *** i have to have on my computer...

  • seems stupid to download to play it on the PC.

  • I think that anyone who is upset by this hasn't used Origin. The alpha used it and it was an extremely easy transition from what everyone is used to. Being able to find out info about the server you're thinking about joining in your browser and launching the game from there is pretty dang cool and a heck of a lot faster than having to launch the game, then find a server. It really isn't that big of a deal when it boils down to it.
  • I found out that an EA account I made for NCAA 10 on my PS3 eventually led to me having a orign account already so if this orgin thing sticks around till I hopefully get a gaming PC it'll be one less thing to worry about

  • I'm still not caring for Origin, sorry EA. Then again, I won't care to download it either.
  • EA, you just lost an eighth of your sales.
  • Like I care, I'm getting BF3 no matter what, but seriously origin client only takes up about 40MB of HDD space, doesn't start up on its own (unless you tick a box) and if you're really bothered by it running in the background on you're pc after you're done with the game is it really a problem to righ click and select close/exit... seriously all this bitchin' about nothing and in the end you're gonna end up with it installed for this game or another.
  • And the truth comes out.

  • It seems game devs lately are just thinking to themselves "What can we possibly do to piss off every person who wants to play our games?" And then does it. But this is just the Diablo 3 thing getting to me
