Analysts Want Nintendo To Make Games For iPhone And Android

by Matt Helgeson on Aug 11, 2011 at 04:19 PM

A prominent Japanese fund manager says Nintendo needs to embrace emerging mobile platforms.

In an article on Bloomberg, Stats Investment Management's Masamitsu Ohki says that he disagrees with Nintendo head Satoru Iwata's current stance that Nintendo will only make games for its own platforms.

Ohki said, “Smartphones are the new battlefield for the gaming industry. Nintendo should try to either buy its way into this platform or develop something totally new.”

Nintendo's much-anticipated Nintendo 3DS handheld has suffered lower-than-expected sales, and many industry analysts believe it is because of increased competition for handheld gaming time and dollars from the new generation of iPhone and Android platforms.

Ohki says that Nintendo could possibly make an acquisition in the mobile space, given that the company has $13 billion war chest it has amassed over the years.
