Star Wars: X-Wing Returns On Tabletop

by Matt Miller on Aug 08, 2011 at 07:59 AM

The fondly remembered space combat franchise is getting a new lease on life in a surprising milieu. The newly announced X-Wing miniature game comes from one of the world's foremost tabletop game publishers.

Fantasy Flight Games made the news official last week. By acquiring the rights to create certain tabletop games within the Star Wars universe, the company is set to bring two brand new games to market in 2012.

The first, and perhaps most exciting for many video game fans, is a tabletop space combat game that shares a name with the beloved PC action/flight sim, X-Wing. Like that classic title, the new miniature game pits Rebel X-Wing fighters against Imperial Tie Fighters in intense dogfights. The two-person tactical fights have each player controlling their ships and executing tactical attacks on their opponent.

In addition, Fantasy Flight is also debuting Star Wars: The Card Game, a  new cooperative tabletop game for 1-4 players, in which players adopt the role of members of the rebel alliance as they try to bring down the Empire. Players build a deck and take on story-based scenarios. It's also a living card game, which means there will be regular non-random expansions. Unlike a collectible card game, you always know the exact cards you'll be receiving in any expansion to a living card game.

Both new Star Wars games are set for release sometime in 2012. Fantasy Flight is one of the best tabletop game makers in the business, so we're hopeful that the final product does justice to the beloved Star Wars license.
