Blizzard Defends Always-Online Requirement For Diablo III

Speaking to Game Informer, Blizzard VP of online technologies Rob Bridenbecker was quick to point out the benefits of requiring players to always play Diablo III online. Unsurprisingly, Bridenbecker downplayed piracy prevention's role in the decision while talking up the ways being online improves a player's experience.

"One of the problems we ran into back in the day was that we had two different, disjointed worlds that were being created," Bridenbecker told GI. Blizzard always hated the fact that players had to start over with a new character to play online on Diablo II's closed Battle.net (a vastly superior experience to the hack-infested open Battle.net), losing their single-player offline progress. "Even the people that want to play alone eventually will want to play with other players," Bridenbecker said. "We wanted to remove that variable altogether."

Bridenbecker also pointed to the integrity of the game economy, especially with the inclusion of territory-wide auction houses for both real money and in-game currency, and how much easier the always-online requirement makes Blizzard's job of creating a hack-free, optimal experience for its players. "There are just way too many benefits to ignore," he said.

On the piracy front, Bridenbecker insisted that the game design aspects of the decision were a much larger priority. "You know, piracy is always the one that folks point their fingers at; you know, 'this is the reason that companies are doing that.' And for us, at the end of the day when you look at World of Warcraft, and StarCraft II, and even going back to Diablo II, Diablo, and the original StarCraft, we've always been about online play, so that's the dominant reason for the decision," he said.

Personally, as a gamer, this decision doesn't affect me in the slightest – I was always going to play Diablo III online with server-stored characters, and I love the gameplay itself. I agree with Blizzard that that's by far the best way to play a Diablo game. At the same time, I have a hard time buying that preventing people from re-rolling a new character to play online was of such overwhelming importance that Blizzard had to completely disallow offline, locally-stored play.

I'm sympathetic to the piracy angle. I don't even necessarily disagree with the design argument, since I do truly believe that playing Diablo online is a strictly superior experience. On the other hand, you don't need an MBA to understand that there are many business reasons that Blizzard wants everyone to connect to their servers using a Blizzard account.

On the whole, though, I have to side with the many outraged gamers making their voices (shrilly, in most cases) heard on the Internet. I'm the guy who loves playing online, and I would lose nothing if others were able to play Diablo III offline. Why not make everyone happy?

  • Indeed, it's a shame for those who may not always have the option to be online... but the core group of Diablo players I imagine are like myself, on a desktop with a connection. Majority rule.
  • I don't have an active internet connection on my PC. I love Diablo. You breaking my heart Blizzard...

I felt the same way with StarCraft 2.
  • "Why not make everyone happy" Because that makes sense, not dollars.
  • So in essence Here it is the Diablo MMO we have always wanted?
  • just means i cant play on my laptop during road/air travells :( but at least i can mash through hordes at home

  • I'm surprised they didn't take a hint from Xbox Live and just let people play offline the way they want. When they finally get back online, check for hacks or exploits, and if found, deal with the problem. Otherwise, sync their character with the servers and continue to play uninterrupted. Don't know if that idea is possible, but I think it'd be worth looking into.
  • so what happens if my unstable internet decides to die for 10 seconds?
  • Hm. I guess this means I probably won't be enjoying this, but me against the thousands who can play this is only valid in Scott Pilgrim. Ah, well. Back to Diablo II.

  • Meh. If it stops the pirates, not a big deal. I suppose there are a few players that get the games for the single player, but that is just odd(to say the least).
  • For a game like Diablo, I don't really care about the always-online requirement. You couldn't even play on the same character for offline and online games. And besides, I thought playing Diablo 2 solo was BORING. Playing with my friends is what made Diablo 2 one of my most beloved games of all time.
  • This is why I DON'T play PC games!
  • A ploy for more money... Standard procedure in the Video Game Market.
  • I like my single player offline I don't like not being able to play games because the internet is out or my network is down. This seriously changes my view point on this game as I do enjoy single player experiences more. Why not just make it multiplayer only at this point?
  • Ugh, screw this. As someone who stays on the move, playing offline was a huge boon for me in Diablo 2. Looks like I'll be sticking with it for a while still. That said, if the game is solid, I'll definitely enjoy playing it at the house. Unfortunately, those times are very rare; rarer still, when I actually lean heavily towards console-based games (what can I say, I prefer a controller over keyboard-and-mouse).
  • Wow.... *** blizzard. And activision for that matter too... Just for this I will never buy diablo III(not likely that i would have since my computer probably wouldn't handle it). But just for this BS if I ever play diablo III it WILL be a PIRATE copy downloaded that I CAN play OFFLINE. just to stick it to them and their shittiness.
  • I don't believe anyone can make me play a game online, so I will jus download a NO-CD Crack and show them who's boss.
  • It bites for those who don't have internet and have no desire for multiplayer, but I see far more advantages to it being online. I think it's a good idea can't wait for the games release.

  • Sad. Blizzard come on. Thats like not including split screen multiplayer for shooters, something that is easy to do and people expect yet for some reason developers just don't do it.

  • Awww dude they officially lost me as a buyer...:(
  • Well, don't blame them. No matter what they say, WE, pc gamers are a large factor in this by pirating.
