Catherine Sold 200,000 In One Week, According To Cake

Announcing sales numbers through press releases is boring. When it comes to Catherine, Atlus has decided to use a different info delivery method: cake.

We already knew that Catherine was the best launch ever for Atlus, but we didn't have hard numbers. According to the picture below (tweeted by AtlusUSA), Catherine sold over 200,000 copies in its first week. That even beats out Demon's Souls, which debuted with 150,000 units during its first month on the NPD charts.

You can read our review of Catherine here, or read an editorial that discusses the game's breed of difficulty here. Unfortunately, I can't give you a link that leads to you eating an actual piece of this delicious-looking cake (click to enlarge):

  • wow...just wow

  • Cool but i will never be getting this game. Too sexual for me
  • Using this as proof, I will say that even in today's video game market which we all believed has matured greatly over the past decade; sex still sells and for this unproven IP it sells well.
  • The cake is a lie.
  • Congrats! I enjoy seeing games like this selling so well here in the US. I wonder what nintendo thinks about it? I didn't pick up Catherine but I know dark souls (different publisher i know but its still a style of game the states doesn't usually see) is a definite buy so I hope it does just as well!

  • I am really liking the game so far. It is a different change of pace from the norm.

  • The Cake is a lie!!!!! Sorry, I had to do it.
  • Hey GI, how bout every time there is news from now on, you say "According to Cake". Don't take that the wrong way. Seriously.
  • The cake is a l- **BRAAAHHHH** not fast enough

  • I'm glad. Catherine looks like an interestng game. I do find it quite odd that there are sheep men falling on to her boobs though. (Also I kind of like the 360 cover image I'm more of an butt guy.)
  • Cake > charts/congratulatory letter

  • Cake, boobies, videogames; what more could someone need.
  • Awesome, it absolutely deserves the sales. I literally just beat the game a few minutes ago. It's definitely one of my favorite games this gen. It was kind of surprising to see how maturely sexuality was handled in Catherine, especially considering the raunchy advertising. The developers should be really proud of this one.
  • That's awesome! Now I must go get some cake! lol

  • Didn't know that there were so many Japanophiles in America...
  • That's awesome, congrats to Atlus! Catherine is truly a game worth checking out, never had so much fun w/ a puzzle game before. Hopefully there'll be a Catherine 2 :)

  • I hope companies like Nintendo of American sit up and take notice that if marketed properly Americans will buy games that this. So yeah, release the Last Story and Xenoblade over here already you bums!

  • well, cakes never lied to me before
  • Sorry I wasn't a purchaser of a glorified tower climbing game...

  • This game has much more to it then just sex, it explores the psyche of a young man while he deals with his issues in regards to sexuality. Its not some leisure suit larry game. I personally hope we get more games like this one. The fact that it sold so well shows people are recognizing it as something more then a cheap thrill.
