Call of Duty Pulled From Stores In Norway Following Breivik Tragedy

Two major Norwegian retailers have pulled Activision's Call of Duty and other titles from the shelves in the wake of the tragic attacks carried out by Anders Breivik.

One chain, called the Coop commented on the action, "'In light of Friday's horrific events, and out of respect for those affected, we have chosen to remove selected items from our range."

The Coop pulled Call of Duty: Black Ops, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Call of Duty: World at War Platinum, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare Classic, Homefront, Sniper: Ghost Warrior, Counter-Strike Source, and World of Warcraft.

Another Norwegian chain, Platekompaniet, also pulled unspecified titles from store shelves.

In spite of the fact that Breivik was not a fan of first-person shooters in general, he did claim to have used Modern Warfare 2 as "part of my training simulation…You can more or less completely simulate actual operations."

Breivik was a gamer, but his tastes ran more towards RPGs and fantasy. He was an avowed World of Warcraft player and claimed to have used a supposed "addiction" to WoW as cover story for the time he spent plotting the massacre.

  • There's one country I won't ever be living in....
  • As expected. I think it is crazy, but what can you do, eh?

  • Anders had problems before he started playing games, correlation does not equal causation
  • Really sad.  The events, not the games being pulled, of course.  My prayers for the people affected.

  • They are just trying to make a common enemy for the puiblic to blame and the FIRST one to blame is video games. Heart of Gaming: Suck My Words best describes this.
  • I didnt see that Halo got pulled. Thank goodness.
  • That's stupid.

    Really stupid.

I'm happy the conservatives in the U.S. haven't reacted THIS intense when a school shooting has taken place. Makes me feel slightly good about the fact I can still play my video games.

I really hope I don't see fanboys from a specific game in this article's comment section. I do not mention the name because usually saying it ignites a war.
  • /facepalm.

  • The only tragedy here is that the whole country is going to be censored because of one nut job.
  • See, one psycho uses video games in a wrong way and the entire industry suffers.
  • the first person shooters is remotely understandable but world of warcraft? really now, should we start pulling movies, books, tv shows and anything else that relates to this
  • People need to stop blaming video games for every tragic event that happens.

  • Very understandable. Crazy people
  • *SHOCK* Now Norway's racist? (Smirk!)
  • Are you surprised?

  • Really? Censorship is fun.

  • I understand it but I don't like it. It paints gamers in a bad light.
  • "You can more or less completely simulate actual operations." *breaks out gigantic DERP stamp*
  • Whatever helps ease their pain for the time being. Kinda weird that the only way these stores can do to respect the dead is pull violent games.

  • From what I understand the games didn't kill anyone. Don't get me wrong my heart goes out to the families however lets blame where blame is due. Also, if they are going to pull games, pull movies, books and any other material that can "influence" people to do terrible things... there's my two cents.
