Some GameCube Titles Are Downloadable On Wii U

Nintendo has confirmed that the Wii U won't be able to play GameCube discs, but you may still be be able to enjoy your favorite games from the old system.

In an interview with NintendoGal, Nintendo of America's director of entertainment and trend marketing Amber McCollum explains how the GameCube era fits into the company's plans.

"Nintendo’s history usually goes back one system.  The Wii was compatible with GameCube and Wii U will be compatible with Wii and that’s pretty traditional in launches from Nintendo," says McCollum. She goes on confirm that some GameCube titles will be available via download: "The GameCube discs will not be compatible with Wii U, but a number of the games that were playable on GameCube can be downloaded from WiiWare."

What those downloadable titles will be isn't clear, but it's no surprise that Nintendo is making plans to capitalize on its history of successful software with Wii U.

  • Hopefully Wind Waker is gonna be downloadable
  • Yay?

  • Oh good. I'm happy.

  • What? Nintendo re-releasing games?
  • TAKE MY MONEY

  • I want Gamecube controller compatibility more.
  • Just give me melee and Im good.
  • Hopefully they can do something where the disc can be inserted and the wii can read what it is and download the virtual(?) copy. I'd hate it if i was forced into re buying some games
  • Wonder how much time will be in between releases seeing how well the Virtual Console has been.
It would suck to pay for a game that I already own, like Wind Waker, but I could just use the Wii. Space is valuable, though.
  • Cubivore, please! I kid. That would be harsh. And while this idea sounds brilliant, I still own my GC collection and a system to play them on, so I think I can live without this. Still a pretty good idea. If the controller can play these on its own, that'll probably be the push to get some of these games.
  • That's awesome, there is nothing better than going on to PSN and seeing PS1 classics like MediEvil, Spyro, Tomb Raider, Syphon Filter etc... Hopefully the Wii U will bring about the same nostalgia w/ GameCube classics :)

  • Sweet I can't wait to play Gamecube games i missed playing the first time arund :D

  • That's all great and all but I would rather have the Wii U be compatible with Gamecube games along with Wii games. My internet connection isn't the best so i may have to keep my Wii hooked up a little longer. Then again i don't play my Gamecube games much anymore...
  • that should work for some games I can't find

  • As long as they dont go charging any more than a used copy of the game.

  • Well neither of which is surprising.  And hey, they can resell you the the games you might have already bought!

  • Wow...no one saw this coming...Nintendo never tries milking old game re-releases...
  • If they release these games in 720p or 1080p then it will be worth it.
  • Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem??? I would love to play that again after so many years!
  • Looks like I'll just buy a used Gamecube + games then! Or a regular Wii, I'm tired of companies just regurgitating the same products from 20 years ago over and over and over and....
