Ex-Blizzard, Cryptic Developer Bill Roper To Head Marvel Games Division At Disney

by Matt Helgeson on Jul 21, 2011 at 03:56 PM

Bill Roper has a long and storied career in gaming, and now he's taking his talents to Disney Interactive, where he'll oversee the company's future Marvel Comics-based video games.

Blizzard fans know Roper well, for his role and producer and voice actor in such classics as Warcraft: Orcs & Humans, Warcraft II, Diablo, Diablo II, and Starcraft. After Blizzard, he founded Flagship Studios and created Hellgate: London. More recently, he's served at Cryptic Studios, working on the online games Star Trek Online and Champions Online.

At Disney, he'll get to work with some of Marvel's iconic characters as chief creative officer for Disney's Marvel division. It appears that Disney, which acquired Marvel in 2009, is serious about bringing its Marvel games in-house. Currently, Marvel has had deals with various publishers and developers, including Sega and Activision. It seems very likely now that -- after those deals expire -- Disney intends to be the sole publisher of all Marvel-related video games.
