Crytek Comments On Vita, Mobile Gaming, New IP

by Matt Miller on Jul 15, 2011 at 07:27 AM

In a recent interview, Crytek's CEO had a lot to say about the direction the industry may be headed.

The interview appeared in the most recent issue of Develop magazine. CEO Cevat Yerli expresses some clear ambitions for his company to move into new gaming platforms in the coming months and years, stating that he hopes to see CryEngine-run games appearing on Kinect, Wii U, mobile platforms, tablets, and pretty much every other major platform in gaming. It's a big shift for a company that for years was known as a PC-exclusive developer.

Yerli also took time to comment on the upcoming PlayStation Vita. "The Vita is an absolutely fantastic platform, but it will have a hard time, and it might be too late. I love Sony as a company, and we have great relations with them, but the Vita is going to have a hard time against the next generation mobiles and all the tablets," Yerli says in the interview.

Amid the talk of upcoming platform support, Yerli also hints at an interesting new IP that he says will cater to indie devs facing the challenge of making a footprint in a crowded game space. "For those studios, we are launching an IP that will empower them, not just from a game development perspective, but in terms of what is beyond game development," Yerli enigmatically states.
