The lights are on
Publishing giant Electronic Arts has reached an agreement to purchase the Bejeweled and Plants vs. Zombies developer for approximately $650 million in cash, plus $100 million more in stock. That's a lot of $3 App Store purchases. The deal could end up costing EA significantly more than that already steep $750 million price tag (which falls short of the $1 billion deal rumored last month), as it includes bonuses for contributions to EA's bottom line through calendar 2013. Unless I'm reading the press release wrong, the additional bonuses could top out over $550 million.Still not convinced that casual, mobile, and browser games are a big deal? Depending on how the additional compensation works out, the PopCap purchase could end up costing more than EA paid for BioWare and Pandemic in 2007. That deal was worth $860 million."We picked EA because they have recast their culture around making great digital games,” PopCap CEO David Roberts said in a press release. “By working with EA, we'll scale our games and services to deliver more social, mobile, casual fun to an even bigger, global audience."EA isn't messing around with this digital distribution stuff. The company has made huge investments in the arena, and now has to be considered the premier player in the space. The purchase is subject to all the usual legal wrangling, and is expected to be finalized in August.
good for EA
A funny side effect of this is that PopCap probably has to stop involvement with Blizzard, which it does occasionally. See for instance "Peacebloom vs Ghouls" in World of Warcraft.
It's interesting. I spoke with a PR guy at PAX EAST and he said that PopCap as partnered with Digital Chocolate...DC is run by Trip Hawkins...who started EA. The plot thickens.
So i want the bejeweled 3 game for arcade xboxlive so i thing we have to see instead the popcap logo in the intro now we see the EA logo.
Nice. This is cool; it's like good old imperialism, except with companies and people instead of land and people.
Id rather have just bought 750 million worth of...jewels. Jewels Betty....jewels.....
I did Like Plants vs Zombies!
I'm playin PvZ as i read this xD
The Bejeweled developer? You mean the Plants Vs Zombies developer. PVZ is clearly the awesomer of the two.
I hope PopCap made the right decision in deciding to get this kind of money in exchange for their individual prowess.
That's cool for EA.
This is just going to push more independent developers out of the game as EA muscles in on their space.
Makes you wonder how EA will be able to make-up all of that money.
I must admit, I just don't like PopCap games.
Not a big fan either. I suppose if every single person in Canada and the US bought just one $2 app, they could get their money back.
don't screw up pop cap EA... like you seem to everything else!
