The Secret World Draft

by Tim Turi on Jul 07, 2011 at 10:59 AM

EA Partners is teaming up with Age of Conan developer Funcom to deliver a new breed of MMO. The game world is steeped in a world of myths and conspiracy, where vampires, zombies, and werewolves are commonplace.

A spokesperson for Funcom said The Secret World is "...a game that asks a simple question: What if every myth, legend, and conspiracy theory were true?"

While players will enjoy a robust progression system as they become a sorceress, marksman, hammer-wielder, etc,  there won’t be leveling or classes. Your character will evolve to fit the play style you prefer.
Factions are split into three groups: Illuminati, Templar, and Dragon. Funcom also confirms that player vs. player combat will be incorporated into the game.

The demo concluded with a pale man finishing up a drink at a bar that seemed to be located in the U.K. The CG in this scene was so convincing, that for a moment I thought the grimace the man made as he lit his cigarettes and the ice cubes in his drink were real. Eventually he moves into the restroom and sidles up to a urinal. Next to him a skinny man collapses and raises from the ground a mess of tentacles. The man seems unconcerned as the multi-eyed abomination encroaches. The reflection of the man in the mirror suddenly moves on its own, turning around to face the camera. Darkness swell as he raises his hand, and the demo ends with the man apparently casting some sort of spell.

While the trailer was very pretty, intriguing, and offers a flavor of what The Secret World may be like, it doesn’t tell us much about gameplay. We’ll be sure to keep you updated as more about this unique MMO surfaces.
