Gearbox: Wii U Is "Really Cool" Stopgap

by Jeff Marchiafava on Jul 07, 2011 at 06:22 AM

In a recent interview, Gearbox co-founder Brian Martel says that Wii U will serve as a stopgap between console generations, but that the company is excited about the gameplay possibilities the new hardware presents.

Speaking with IGN, Martel praised Nintendo's timing. "Right now we're still finding out what kind of final tech specs the Wii U is going to have. But we like the system a lot; we think it's going to be a really cool stopgap in between this generation and the next generation. We think it's really smart of Nintendo, and the fact that as a platform it's a lot more capable for hardcore first-person shooter-style gaming – for us that's fantastic."

While the Wii U demos at E3 didn't blow away the PS3 or Xbox 360 in terms of visuals, Martel suggests the Wii U may have some sort of graphical superiority: "We've got the [Aliens: Colonial Marines] engine running on the Wii U, and as far as the console goes, you're going to see textures at a resolution that you haven't seen on [the current] generation."

We'll have to wait for some concrete gameplay footage to find out what the Wii U processor is truly capable of, but Martel's statements are welcome news for gamers looking for more than casual titles from a Nintendo console.
