IBM Creates New Memory Technology 100 Times Faster Than Flash

IBM just revealed its new phase-change memory (PCM) tech that could drastically change computing and gaming.

IBM says that PCM is able to write and retrieve data 100 times faster than Flash memory. It also lasts much longer, surviving 10 million write cycles compared to the 3,000 cycles of Flash that the average consumer can use.

This kind of advancement should be super expensive, right? Engadget reports that it'll be cheap enough to use on everything from business servers to cell phones.

IBM claims that PCM will herald a "paradigm shift" when it hits the market in 2016.

Since it's so far off, we'll likely not see it in the next Xbox or PlayStation, but Nintendo might be ready for a follow up to the Wii U at that point.

  • Saw this on Engadget yesterday. Looking forward to the day we can have PCM Drives, or Phase Drives, or whatever the hell they'll be called. The real question is, will the connection be USB or Thunderbolt?
  • So awesome... I love being alive to witness these sort of advancements. So much for the future of the SSD... guess we'll FINALLY see that tech come down in price over the next year.
  • I never knew you had a limited amount of usage with Flash. Anyways, can't wait for this, or well, I could, considering it's so far off.

  • D*mn. I had just upgraded my PC to SSD too.
  • Things like this actually gives me faith in humanity.
  • Can't wait for this to be implemented in the latest phones, consoles and computers. Just when we think we've reached the pinnacle of computer advancement, another breakthrough comes about to astound us.
  • Pretty awesome. But by the time THAT comes out, we'll be seeing stuff that can do even more.
  • Better AND cheaper?  A very rare thing indeed.  Usually new tech starts out so expensive it's only feasible to people with too much money who like the novelty of having the latest and greatest.

  • Gaming is going to be insane in the future! New Technology FTW!
  • looks interesting. I wonder if it will be dense enough to be implemented as a primary hard drive soon. there is that law that states that the density of data storage will double every two years. My prediction is that people will not use this until it gets alot more dense then it is now. How many people really want a 2gb hard drive, even if it super incredibly fast. SSDs will probably be the best for a few more years, until this gets dense enough to actualy challenge it.
  • So we've got about five years to go until then.  Looking forward to seeing this implemented in future technology, including video game consoles.

  • It's pretty exciting to think about the possibilities but I'll nerd out over that kinda thing when it gets closer to my hands.

  • New memory chip that lasts longer and can write and retrieve data.

  • it'll be on time for the PS4
  • didn't know flash memory had a lifespan no wonder 1 of my things don't work lol... seems like a good thing to have new tech but feels early *** the speed of growing technology i wonder what cheap really means when it releases tho lol
  • Oh dear.

  • Next step... Terminatiors!

  • Holy ***, I really can't imagine what will happen in the next 50 years...
  • Oh SH!T

  • Amazing.
