Rumor: PS3 Price Cut Coming In August

by Phil Kollar on Jun 25, 2011 at 11:30 AM

Sony pleased a lot of fans at E3 when it announced a reasonable $249.99 price point for the Wi-Fi-only version of the upcoming PlayStation Vita. Now a new rumor suggests that Sony is going to keep the good news and good pricing coming at Gamescom later this year.

MCV has heard that at the Gamescom event in Cologne, Germany in August, Sony will announce a big European price cut for the PS3, dropping it from its current £255 to £179.99. There's no direct U.S. conversion for that, as Europeans tend to pay a lot more for video game hardware, but ShackNews estimates that if the price cut carries over to this territory, the PS3 could drop to somewhere in the $200-$250 range, down from its current $299.99 price point.

This price cut is definitely still firmly in rumor territory, but we'll know for sure soon enough. Gamescom runs August 17 through 21, and GI will be over in Germany covering the event and any big news to come out of it.
