[UPDATE] Report: PopCap May Have Sold For $1 Billion

by Joe Juba on Jun 24, 2011 at 10:24 AM

[UPDATE] TechCrunch now has heard from two sources that the mystery buyer is Electronic Arts.

While this is far from confirmation, it certainly is a lot of money to be throwing around in secret.

Original Story: June 22, 2011 at 08:33 PM

PopCap Games has a knack for accessible experiences, creating hits like Bejeweled, Zuma, and Plants vs. Zombies. Now, reports are surfacing that an unnamed company has acquired the developer for the steep price of one billion dollars.

TechCrunch, citing "multiple sources," is reporting that the acquisition is currently in process. Though no official announcement has come from PopCap itself, the company did tell Joystiq the standard "we do not comment on rumors and speculation" line (even after the site apparently debunked the rumor).

PopCap is certainly a major player in casual space...which, like it or not, is one of the most lucrative spaces in the industry right now. We'll be anxious to see how this story develops.
