Red Dead Redemption Featured On MPR Top Score Podcast

If you think that public radio is just for political geeks and old people then you’re missing out on cool content like this interview with Bill Elm, one of the composers for Red Dead Redemption.

Minnesota Public Radio recently started a podcast called Top Score, which talks specifically about video game soundtracks. During a recently podcast, host Emily Reese sat down to talk with composer Bill Elm about his inspiration while working on Red Dead Redemption as well as his own Austin based band called Friends of Dean Martinez. The podcast is worth listening to for any fan of the game.

  • My favorite was actually Far Away by Jose Gonzalez (the first song with lyrics, when you first enter Mexico- still one of the most memorable moments in gaming of 2010- or at all).

Of Elm's work, I was most fond of Triggernometry and Redemption In Dub.

As is often the case with R* games, truly a phenomenal soundtrack; this one's right up there with Oscar-nod receiving film scores.
  • I rarely ask for ports from Console to PC, but please!!! Come on Rockstar! Millions of fans will scream out in joy. I promise.
  • I loved the soundtrack and the game. The song that was playing when you going to reunite with you family was probably the best song out of any game of all time. Almost made me cry :'(.

  • I've been listening to this podcast since the second episode. It's really great and I'm glad to hear interviews with such talented composers. The Gary Schyman episode was amazing!

Also, I'm one of those political geeks haha!

  • This is my favorite new podcast. I think the Stacking episode has been my favorite so far. But in future episodes I'd like to hear some interviews with maybe the guy who did Infamous or the guy who did Uncharted.

    Gotta love public radio.

  • Great show!

  • I have to admit that when you first go into Mexico and the song "Far Away" first starts playing that might be the best queue of a song in video game history. The melody of that song is very haunting and sublime and when it came on it was surprising how perfectly it matched the atmosphere of the game. I immediately looked up what song that and listened to it a few times.

  • This game is a 10/10 and the soundtrack is a 10/10. Hoping for red dead 2 soon
  • Red Dead Redemption is a great game, I just finished playing it for a third time this week.

  • I think the music for RDR is absolutely perfect for a game of that genre, I also like the music in Undead Nightmare, it suits it even better.
  • Minnesota has two great things:

Radio... and Hockey! I'm glad the music brings the setting and mood for the game!

  • Top Score is a fantastic podcast. It makes me want to go back and replay games. This one was no exception. Overall, Bill Elm's soundtrack (all 18 hours worth) really help define what makes RDR great, but I agree with others that the standout track is actually Far Away by Jose Gonzalez, which helped transform my like of the game into a love of the game.
