Lawsuit Alleges Sony Security Staff Fired Before Network Hack

A recently filed class action lawsuit against Sony claims that prior to the PlayStation Network hacking, the company laid off a significant number of the network security team.

Gamasutra obtained a copy of the complaint and posted several of its key allegations.

"Sony sought to cut its costs at the expense of its customers by terminating a significant number of employees immediately prior to the security breach, including personnel responsible for maintaining the security of the network," reads the complaint.

The lawsuit cites several confidential witnesses, one of which says that Sony "spent lavishly" to protect its own PS DevNetwork development server "but recklessly declined to provide adequate protections for its customers' personal information."

Check out more info on the lawsuit in Gamasutra's analysis.

  • Sounds ugly. Although, can anyone explain what the difference is between the "PS DevNetwork development server" and the server that holds customer personal information?
  • I smell a company getting burned... a lot
  • Seemed like a good idea at the time...

  • Sony needs to have a great holiday season, they are just getting hit from every side. Hopefully the Vita will help some but that all depends on when it drops.
  • I am going to pretend that I didn't hear that.
Edit: I mean that I didn't want to figure out that Sony is run by morons.
  • If it's true, shame on them, and to anyone who instantly jumped to their defense, have a big slice of humble pie on me.

If not, hopefully they'll be vindicated post haste.
  • This proves nothing. It's a lawsuit against Sony that does little more than make claims.
  • Or we could forget the outage ever happened and get on with our lives. IDK. There hasn't been any reports of anyone being harmed by the outage. I'm just really tired of these lawsuits claiming "Sony did this, Sony didn't do that" it is ridiculous. They are only targeting Sony because of the outage, but i'm sure there are a lot of companies out there that hold personal information that have worse security than Sony. They claim Sony took to long to warn people, but as we have learned from all the hacks recently, a lot of companies have taken as long or longer than Sony did to warn their customers. just my opinion.
  • Posted several key allegations...but not the whole thing, of course they would.
  • I like giving my personal information away. I hope Sony does it again! :D
  • I hope they were horrible at their jobs and the hacks were successful due to their ineptitude which led to their justifiable termination, otherwise Sony is more to blame for the hacks than I thought.
  • I will live PlayStation I will be PlayStation I will die PlayStation no matter what !
  • Here the more likely scenario:
Security section (if there really was any) demanded funding for better security
    Sony bosses denied them
    hacked
Sony bosses fire some peasants who had no influence in this at all.
  • wow, thats what you deserve for cutting corners like that. way to go Sony.
  • Sort of makes you wonder if the people who were fired had anything to do with the hacks.
  • Sony deserves this lawsuit. Hope more is to come.
  • This might just be me pulling at straws here, but does anyone see the potential link between the hacks and the let-go? They let these people who go who were in charge of security, security gets hacked thereafter, and suddenly there's probable cause for a lawsuit because of it. Just saying, looks fishy and not at all out of the realm of possibilities.
  • Would anyone be shocked if that actually happened... at hundreds of companies all across the country?

  • C'mon... Really?

  • Haha. "Say, Bill. Why are we paying all these network security people when we never get hacked anyways?" "I...I don't know. I guess I never thought about it. It does seem like a waste of money, doesn't it?" *Fires network security team* *Gets Hacked* "Oh. So that's why we paid those guys..."
