Smash Bros. On Wii U Is A Long Ways Off

During E3, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata dropped the news that the Smash Bros. franchise would be making its way to the 3DS and Wii U systems. But if you’re hoping to hear more about those titles anytime soon, you might be out of luck.

During his weekly column in the Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu, Smash Bros. creator Masahiro Sakurai explain how his team has been too busy working on the new Kid Icarus: Uprising for 3DS that they haven't had time to start thinking about the future of the Smash Bros. brand.

"Right now, we're devoting all our manpower to working on Kid Icarus," Sakurai stated in the article. "We've got no plans whatsoever – we've got two new games out in the open when there's no extra time to work with them at all. It makes me cringe, and I'm not sure it's the smartest thing to make gamers wait for several years, but the early announcement was made chiefly in order to attract new team members."

If you’re curious to know which system Sakurai plans to start working on first, you might be interested to know that he went on to write, “Iwata asked us if wanted to make the next Smash Bros. on the Wii U or 3DS, and my thought was that we had to go on both platforms.”

We’re eager to hear more about what that could mean. Unfortunately, we suspect that it might be a few years before Nintendo is willing to release any relevant details about the next Smash Bros. game.

  • How about a star fox game? PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • I stand here, tapping my foot impatiently like gamer I am. I will wait for you Nintendo, be it a millennia, I will wait.

  • Well I can't remember any smash bros. releasing at the launch of a system.
  • Aww. I think Kid Icarus looks so retarded and THATS WHY SMASH BROS. ISNT FREAKING COMING SOON.
  • Thank God. Thats all the info i needed to prevent me from buying this thing.
  • I hope a MS character makes the roster this time. I would love to see the Master Chief shoot the grin off of Wario's face.
  • these games are always fun, i think they should take alot of time on this systems and make it amazing with awesome HD grafics
  • I didn't follow Nintendo's Wii U unveiling all too closely, but I am a Smash Bros fan, and I have to say, unless the Wii U allows Gamecube controller support I don't know if I could even play it on the Wii U's controller.
  • Well that's unfortunate, but it's also not surprising at all.  I guess we'll just have to wait 2-4 years for some kind of official announcement then.

    And my apologies to Luigi...

  • ......ya because a kid icarus game will be WAY better than a smash bros title good call nintendo, this is just as bad as having one of your guys say multiplayer will never be good on nintendo
  • Ah man that would have been awesome if super smash would release when the wii U releases big headliner

  • U shocked bro?

They haven't even started - it's going to take them a loooong time to top the last one.  I don't envy them.  It's got to always be lurking on the fringe of their mind like a total eclipse...

  • nooooooo!

  • Although i'm excited for both, i'd rather have Smash Bros than Kid Icarus

  • They should certainly take their time making a new Smash Bros. Personally, I didn't like the jump they made from Melee to Brawl. Melee still feels best while playing than Brawl does.
  • Lol jk, super secret launch title

  • Well if they use Brawl as the base of development, then we could be seeing it sooner than the average time to make a game

  • Considering wiiu is a ways off, its not that bad

  • In a few years I'll still be popping in Brawl, so I am in no real hurry to see a new Smash Bros. game. I say let them take their time.

  • I think everybody should have figured as much. Think about how long he said he's been working on Uprising, then think about how long Brawl itself took and then you should realize that this wasn't gonna be coming within the next 2 years.
