The lights are on
Last week at E3 2011, I had a chance to sit down and chat with video
game luminary Shigeru Miyamoto. We’ll be posting the interview in full
tomorrow, but to offer a glimpse, here’s what the creator of
Donkey Kong, Mario, and Zelda had to say when asked why the Wii and Wii U
aren’t as colorful as past Nintendo systems.
“Based on my background as an industrial designer and Nintendo and my
background in creating entertainment, I’ve always wanted to make
greater use of color in our hardware,” said Miyamoto. “If you look back
on things like the Famicom and the original Super Nintendo, they were a
lot more colorful from a hardware perspective.
"What we found over the years when we included a lot of different
colors in our hardware is people would kind of point to that and use it
to paint us as more kid-oriented. So really what we looked at is what
are some ways from a design perspective that can make the system appeal
to all ages One of the ways that we found to best do that is to minimize
the use of color. In that process we asked if we’re going to do that,
what’s the best way to go? We found that rather than going all black -
all white seems to have a broader appeal to people.”
Check back tomorrow to learn more from Miyamoto on Nintendo’s new
console, Zelda’s 25th anniversary, and some interesting facts about
Email the author Tim Turi, or follow on Twitter, and Game Informer.
Honestly i think the purple on the gamecube was the best color on a system but thats just my opinion.
I like white cause it doesnt show dust really but when a PS3 is clean it looks completely sexy lol but i like white too
Purple is the the best color to use for a console. Check out my Spartan on halo reach, its so cool it will give you the chills.
i still miss the funtastic series!
"Asian Honkies"(Code Monkeys reference). I think the colors can add personalization to which color palette you chose, otherwise I don't really care, my PS3 and 360 are black and white and they both look awesome.
I love black, but white is always good, so I have to give it to Miyamoto on that one.
I think keeping it white appeals more to a casual audience instead of the core gamer.
Keeping it all white looks too much like the wii. It's not even the sleek stylish white that APPLE have lol, it's more like a cheaper plastic white.
White is about my least favorite color. Well, not really. But I'd much prefer a plain black, or something cool like they used to have. Honestly though, they really just need to give us a choice. If people want white, cool, but I really don't, let me pick something else.
who would have thought asians could be so racist, whats wrong with a black wii...oh wait they made that didnt they? nevermind...
I'm so sick of miyamoto, most of the innovating he did was back on the original nes all the follow up games are (fun) re dos of previous entries
Personally, I prefer a black console. White consoles annoy me.
It makes sense too because the xbox and ps3 are both black
Jeez, people are console racists.
I'm sure they are right and have a bunch of case studies backing them up, but I would definitely like to see game consoles be less bland. You could still give us a choice in color.
Nah, white stands out... most electronic devices are black adn if you're trying to put the Wii/WiiU in your entertainment center it's just gonna stick out like a sore thumb. I don't know... I just prefer my electronics to be black.
Don't worry guys, when the Wii U is out you can MOD it any color you like.
Can wait to see when people gonna Mod it the console.
I want multi colors like black, red, blue, green hell ill even go with purple
