Double Fine Now Has Sole Publishing Rights To Psychonauts

Double Fine's Psychonauts is one of the most beloved cult titles of all times, and now the company is the sole owner of the publishing rights to the game.

The new came through a tweet by Double Fine senior gameplay programmer Anna Kipnis, who said:

"Omg Double Fine is now the sole publisher of Psychonauts!! If you buy it now (on Steam, for instance), the proceeds go to us! #Psychonauts"

I asked her to clarify, and she responded that Double Fine has always owned the IP, but previously the publishing rights were owned by Majesco, which originally published the game on Xbox, PS2, and PC in 2005. Now according to Kipnis, the rights have reverted back to Double Fine.

The proceeds from all future digital sales of Psychonauts (which is available on Steam and Xbox Live) will now go entirely to Double Fine. If you haven't played the game, you should,  it's about as charming as it gets. Let's hope Double Fine uses the money from sales to make a long-awaited sequel.

  • I have not played the first... I know I should.
  • Which one: sequel or HD remake?
  • Put it on PSN! I started watching a walkthrough a while back but stopped because I rather play myself. Bring it to me Double Fine and I'll buy it!
  • never played it but heard good thingsif it ever show up on psn ill check it out

  • Psychonauts is still one of my absolute favorite platformers. The way mental instabilities and psychoses are turned into aesthetics and gameplay elements is hugely inspiring. It's imaginitive, hilarious, and fun as hell. And if there ever was a time to buy it, it's now: when the proceeds to straight to the ingenious minds behind this game of minds. News like this I can handle.
  • Never played it, its on the list though. Thank god for backwards compatibility.

  • Ive heard about this title a lot in the past, guess its time to finally investigate

  • I love this game. I almost cried when i was told they wouldn't make a sequel. I will buy it again if it brings a sequel.
  • Great news! Hope to see more Psychonauts in the future. ^_^
  • Yes! That means they can make a sequel!

  • Radical news... other than previous statements from Schafer dispelling the idea of a Psychonauts sequel, and the probability of the game still bringing in much money is pretty slim :/

  • Well, I have one question: does this mean that they will now make a sequel, now that they have full rights to the title?
  • Psychonauts 2 here we come.

It probably won't happen but I really, really want a sequel.
  • psn plz

  • Well, time to buy it again, I suppose. Ah what the heck, I'll buy it on my both accounts! I really want a sequel!

  • Fantastic game. If they still can't manage a sequel, here's hoping they will at least be able to release some smaller DLC Psychonauts games in the future.
  • You can also get it for $9.99 and DRM free on gog.com. Just thought I'd throw that out there.

  • This means nothing to me unless it spurs them to get to work on a sequel. It's great that they now get all the money from sales of the game, but I bought my copy years and years ago and I'm just waiting on the sequel.

  • playstation sucks ponint blank. I had it longer then my 360 and the 360 still gets more play time.
