Id: Rage Sales Will Be Split Evenly On Consoles And PC

Id Software CEO Todd Hollenshead predicts that its upcoming game, Rage, will sell one third on PlayStation 3, another third on Xbox 360, and the last bit on PC, in contrast to previous skews toward PC.

In an interview with Eurogamer, Hollenshead describes the change. "I'm not in the sales forecast business, and I don't want to be making projections for the company on the basis of that. But if we're just going to do napkin math, that's as good as any," he says. "Maybe it's 70 percent among the consoles and 30 on the PC, or maybe 75, 25. But we're still talking two-thirds plus of the sales being on PS3 or Xbox 360."

Hollenshead expressed id's console focus straight from the get-go, realizing the changing gaming landscape.

"So, while we're developing Rage on the PC, we forbid anybody from playing it on a keyboard and mouse until we've played it first on a console controller," he says. "We pull the keyboard and mouse out and put in a USB 360 controller, even on the development staff. That's not just the testers."

  • Can some one explain this to me in english.
  • so they are making it on PC but dont want people playing it on PC?? or am i just not getting it?
  • All they are saying is that about 70% of the games sales will be console versions and the remaining 30% will be the PC version.

  • That actually sounds like a good way to make the game more even across platforms without having to dumb down one experience or the other

  • PC getting an equal share of a multiplat? Ha!
  • the company is designing the game on a pc just like every game company does but they arent playing the game with a keyboard

  • ...and yet a keyboard and mouse is a hell of a lot better than a controller. Im still picking this up on pc
  • while i perfer to use a controller even on pc i find it kinda wrong not letting them play it with a keyboard/mouse 1st for pc version
  • I imagine it will be more like 2/5 a piece for PC and 360, the remaining 1/5 PS3.
  • Hmm.

  • Wait, is he counting the amount that will be pirated as PC sales?
  • Sounds like they KNOW it'll work on a PC, come on, its ID, they invented the FPS control on a PC... but they want to make sure the game play is as fast and powerful on a controller. Makes sense. I'm torn as to what I'll be getting...

  • Cool I can't wait to play this it looks amazing :D

  • Ill be waiting for reviews before i think about purchasing this game cause Doom 3 looked freakin amazing and fun but once I played it...it wasnt that amazing....im having the same feeling with Rage
  • Yeah I don't know which system I'm gonna get it for but I'm more so leaning toward the PS3

  • All I know is that I'm getting it on 360 and hopefully get as much in before BF3 comes out followed by Skyrim and than Halo CE-y'know what forget it.

  • Ugh, I don't really like that last part. Hopefully this game won't be too console damaged.
  • Is Rage for the PC going to be native DX11 like Frostbite 2 for Battlefield 3 or is just going to be another DX9 console-friendly port?

  • thats fine by me as long as they dont leave pc gamers in the dust. everyone seems to enjoy doing that these days
  • I think he means they are going to release Rage evenly among PS3, 360, and PC.  I don't think he can control the exact sales.
