[Update]: Major Nelson Clarifies 360 Processor Story

[Update]: Microsoft's Major Nelson has clarified the Xbox 360 processor story that's made the rounds, saying that it's old news.

In a tweet, Major Nelson clarifies that the processor in the 250GB hasn't been changed, and that the SoC story is from a year ago. Whoops. Well, all of you new 360 owners don't have to worry that you've bought old goods!

[Original Story]: The Xbox 360 250GB slim models are getting a new processor that the company says will cut down on heat and manufacturing costs, among other benefits.

The System-on Chip (SoC) processor combines the GPU (graphics processor), CPU (main processor), memory, and I/O logic into a single chip.

Microsoft says the chip is five years in the making, and will cut down not only on the processors used and the manufacturing costs associated with this, but also the size of the motherboard, power supply, and offer better heat management. The company says that there will be no compatibility issues with older software.

No word as to when consumers can expect units with the SoC to hit shelves.

  • i was gunna buy an xbox next month, i guess ill just wait for this new model >.>
  • Hopefully, the new Gears of War console will have this chip. That's next on my gaming radar!
  • Im a PS3 fanboy and im actually GLAD that this is coming out.
  • well, that's exciting. i've been thinking about getting a newer slim version, and this just adds to the reasons. also gives me a good reason to wait and think some more

  • Figures I just upgraded to the slim, but I saved money by getting the 250GB hard drive on ebay, so I can't really complain.
  • Can't say as I need it, my elite is more than adequate, those slims look gross. It is encouraging for whatever next gen console microsoft is cooking up as we speak.
  • Any power increase? If not, I guess that's ok. But, I see price drop in the future, so I'll wait to upgrade.
  • NO, just bought 250 slim a few months ago
  • Good job by Microsoft. If manufacturing costs go down, that would most likely mean that the initial price of the 360 would be reduced. In other words, I would buy it.

  • I was going to go buy a new 360 tomorrow since my last one was stolen recently. Is this worth waiting for?
  • cool microsoft.

  • This is a great move by Microsoft, but I still don't see a price drop for a while at least. They are wanting to make as high a profit as possible before dropping the price.

If Sony drops their price again though, you can almost expect a MS price drop too though.

  • If it cuts down on cost maybe a price drop will follow. That would make me happy because I really don't want to spend that much on a new xbox when mine breaks. But it has been working better since the last update so I might be able to hold out for the next xbox if the next one has full backwards compatibility even with dlc and license transfer.
  • Of course, six or seven months after I get my new Xbox 360 Slim, haha. Well, at least they're moving forward with the technology, making it cost less and packing more power into smaller packages. Maybe the next-gen Xbox won't be a brick like the last two iterations. Ahh, who am I kidding... I love my Microsoft door stoppers. It's part of the aesthetics. :)
  • I hear that the console prices will be dropping soon, I hope its true, I'd like to buy a 360 for Gears of War 3
  • If they can pretty much put a whole Xbox 360 architecture on a single chip; then you know that the next gen console is just going to be mind-blowingly powerful, especially considering that it's not exactly a slouch when it comes to raw power.

Wait, does that mean that in a few years we won't groan at the thought of having integrated graphics in our laptops?
  • as a ps3 owner whose fanboy is dissapearing, I'm glad for this, I want to get an Xbox just for Minecraft and maybe other stuff down the road, plus, i won't have to replace it when it red rings after 1 year
  • Why only in the 250GB (S)? Why not all of them?
  • I thought they already started using these but I may be thinking of Sony. I doubt this will lead to a price drop soon, though.
  • Better late than never.
