Nintendo Europe Websites Warn Of Phishing Threat

by Matthew Kato on Jun 12, 2011 at 04:42 AM

Nintendo is the latest victim of a cyber attack. The company is warning its European consumers of a possible phishing threat.

"We have learned of a possible phishing threat to users of the European Nintendo website which we are currently investigating," reads a statement from the company's European site. The company says that parts of the website will be shut down while it deals with the matter. As of the time of this writing, Club Nintendo Europe is also down for "maintenance."

Nintendo apologizes, and says that the main site doesn't hold customer's bank, credit card, or address info.

Phishing is an attempt to find someone's personal information by pretending to be from a trusted company. By now you've probably experienced a phishing attempt, such as when "PayPal" supposedly sends you an email asking for your username and password.

It's been a very busy time for company's dealing with hackers and cyber threats. Codemasters has revealed that users' data has been stolen from its site, and Epic reported that its forums had been hacked. Still, at least three people were arrested in Spain for denial of service attacks on Sony and other entities.
