The lights are on
Whether you use your PC for gaming or just surfing the web, this is the shape of things to come. An interesting video blog cropped up this week from Microsoft that should be of interest to anyone in the gaming crowd, given the amount of time most of us spend on a computer for one reason or another. The video shows off the dramatic changes coming to the next version of Windows, which is expected to start showing up on everything from laptops and desktop computers to tablets in late 2012. Windows 8 is currently only a code name -- Microsoft is likely to announce a final name for the new operating system sometime before release. The video does a good job of showing just how different the new system will be. Optimized for touch-screens, but still purported to be friendly to mouse and keyboard users, Windows 8 appears to abandon many of the legacy interface ideas that have been around for years. Check out the brief video, and then share your thoughts in the comments below. What do you think of Windows' upcoming departure from its traditional presentation? Is the change a smart move to compete against the work being done by companies like Apple? Do you see any features in the new OS that you particularly like or dislike?

It's like the xbox interface on your PC :\ interesting.
Pretty sure Windows 8 still has a traditional Windows interface in addition to this. I know I certainly won't be using this new UI.
bah looks like its guided towards more casuall PC users. I think i'll stick with Windows 7 TYVM.
I don't understand why theykeep trying to make computers pretty. I'd rather have functionality than a pretty interface.
No thanks. Blech.
theres some good and bad to be said about this. it shows microsoft is serious about moving into the portable space, as this os was clearly built for tablets. but by doing so, microsoft is only attending to a very small demographic, as more people have pcs than tablets. maybe itll work, but i dont see this being too strong on pcs.
This is gonna be run on PC? no way im not going touchscreen on my PC cause it would suck :| but it would be great on a laptop.
maybe make laptops without that annoying mousepad ( really hate that thing, Who in there right mind thought of that )
and then you can use your finger as a mouse and use keyboard for typing!
that would be so awesome (L)
But if you think of it this would be better for windows mobile ( and maybe there trying to compete with the Ipad and this is gonna be its interface ) and not for PC or laptop.
No thanks
Should call it Windows Vista 2.
If this were on a tablet, great.
If this were on a desktop, I would stick to Windows 7, thanks. Seems it alternates between good and bad with every release: XP = good, Vista = bad, 7 = good, 8 = bad
that looka good. for a tablet, they are stupid if they think this would be good on a lap/desktop. unless it is half windows 7/xp and half windows 8. please, microsoft, i respect you as a computor company, but if you do something worse than vista, i will lose all respect for you.
this new look may streamline browsing hopefully without cutting customization or functionality
Oh so they made a tiling window manager.
'cause that's a new idea.
I honestly am not so sure that Microsoft understands that people generally *cope* with iOS/Android interfaces rather than embrace them. It seems like they saw tablets and smartphones and thought that somehow this UI applies everywhere.
Quite honestly, what they need to do is offer flexibility and some well-defined place to find window managers that people create and just let people choose what facilitates their workflow most, rather than force users to make limited choices.
I have enjoyed my Windows phone 7, and this looks like an extension of that interface only on a much larger scale. I for one am looking forward to this upgrade, and can we please see a Windows Tablet.
Great idea for tablets and stuff, Horrid idea for computers.
I'll be sticking to Windows 7 thank you very much.
How is this going to work.
Nice. I'm glad that they are branching off.
