Battlefield 3 Integrating Social Features

DICE general manager Karl Magnus Troedsson revealed that the studio's upcoming shooter will launch with a powerful web portal that includes social tools, friend feeds, detailed stats, voice chat, real-time friend tracking, and more. The monthly fee for all this additional multiplayer support: $0.

In a blog post teasing Battlefield 3's E3 presence, when he wasn't taking shots at that other multiplayer shooter franchise Troedsson mentioned that DICE and EA will be showing off both single- and multiplayer gameplay, and that the press will be able to play multiplayer on a single map called Operation Metro. He also made mention of team deathmatch, the ubiquitous mode that DICE normally avoids in its releases.

Send your jealous vibes Matt Bertz's way; he'll be the GI editor knee deep in BF3 at the show. Look for extensive hands-on reporting dropping here next week.

  • I think they're really rolling with CoD's punches on this one. CoD charges, they do it for free.

  • Is this DICE making fun of COD or are they for real about this thing?
  • As long as I can enter a game with my bud, be on the same team, squad. I still can't figure out how to do that with bfbc2. If I join his, it randomly tosses me on a team. You can't join "together" as far as I can tell.

  • I want to wear Matt Betz skin so I can go to E3 and play battlefield. Is that creepy?
  • In other words, they're giving us normal social features for free while IW is going to be charging us for them with MW3. You gotta love EA!
  • lolololololololol free CoD Eliete for BF3! :D

  • Words cannot describe how excited I am for this to come out.

  • Hm...COD Elite just lost all its appeal to me lol.

  • OWNED ACTIVISION!!!

  • Doesn't halo have a form of this as well? I know cod does finally but didn't halo start this? And theater mode and user created maps for shooters? Maybe it's just me but, I think halo needs a little more appreciation... Anyways, GO BATTLEFIELD!!
  • Bit of a coincidence that this is announced a couple of days after CoD Elite....Still I think in my personal opinion that Battlefield looks to be the better game but who am I to judge? I'm not buying either :)

  • Meh, don't think this is necessary, but if they want to do it more power to them.  Plus the news for team death match mode sounds good.  With all this cod talk, they should focus more on the game itself then constantly saying "better then call of duty."  We seen the trailers, now really impress us more at E3 without mention cod.

  • LOL just another reason why battlefield is better than cod, cod has something similar with Elite but they make you pay a fee and battlefield 0$, I want to know when the beta is!

  • would think almost all games these days should have this feature

  • Looks like I no longer need Facebook.

  • Yes! Now all the decent FPSs have this! (KZ, CoD, BF)

  • BF series has always had stat tracking (at least BF2 did) so I would expect as much here.

    Thank you EA!

  • CoD did the same with "Elite" But I think this will be so much better. I mean the best part about it is....ITS FRIGGEN FREE!

  • WOW. Lmao! When I saw the fee sentence I was like "What it cost's money?!?" And then I saw the $0... lol. This is amazing though... everything if not BETTER that stupid Elite has... but free.... tsk tsk Activision... this should show you a very valuable lesson.

  • The monthly fee for all this additional multiplayer support: $0.

    Haha this made me laugh.
