The lights are on
During a conference call to investors, Sony executive VP and CFO Masaru Kato said that "our development work is already under way" for a "future platform."
Kato was responding to a question about Sony's increased research and development costs. The quote in full reads:
“For the home equipment the PS3 still has a product life, but this is a platform business, so for the future platform – when we’ll be introducing what product I cannot discuss that – but our development work is already under way, so the costs are incurred there," Kato said.
He claims that Sony is taking a more economical approach with the next console: “It is no longer thinkable to have a huge initial financial investment like that of the PS3.”

Probably talking about the NGP, although, it makes sense that they'd be working on the follow-up to the PS3, simply because it'd be foolish to NOT be working on it. It'll take at least a year or two to develop the console itself, and another year or two to craft the first games for it. Chances are, they've been working on the next Playstation console for over a year or so.
I still don't expect it to be out before 2013. Better to prepare a way to destroy Project Cafe, and let the PS3 age in style same as the PS2.
Nice to know they're going to factor cost into the next system.
I think it's acceptable to expect a new PlayStation by the end of 2013. That's 7 years of PS3 and by the time the new console comes out, I'm pretty sure we'll have experienced everything the current gen consoles have to offer. We had our motion controllers, the beautiful graphics and the amazing new franchises that are slowly coming to an end. We need to start over with a stronger machine and new IPs. So, this is exciting news!
I can't wait to see what they have in store, but until that day I will be playing my PS3..
i think its too soon.
There is stil much potential in ps3.
NO!!!! Gah. I hope it comes out in 2013, I really think my PS3 is great.
**BRAAAHHHH**. I got a PS3 this year and they're already working on something new.
I'm going to assume that 2013 seems likely. And I'm sure there will also be a new MS product around the same timeframe. I will most likely end up getting both, but probably not at launch, depends on pricing.
It better not come out for another 3 years, I just got my PS3 a year ago.
I like to think my PS3 has lots of life left in it. I will be sad to see it replaced already regardless of if its 'economical.'
I'd like to say that this news isn't that big, there's always going to be another console. Though I am excited to see how the approach making a new console and what they do to make it awesome.
So they are going to make a Wii.
*** MY LIFE. I CANT AFFORD TO BUY NEW-GEN CONSOLES. thanks ALOT Nintendo for starting this. I hate Sony, Nintendo and probably in the future, Microsoft for this.
I don't know guys, asking for $600 every 5-6 years isn't that much money. I mean, 'high-end smartphones' cost $600 and people buy new ones every year.
I feel like the home consoles are holding back gaming because the technology is nowhere near comparable to high-end PCs.
I really hope the next PS3 is at least $599. Like the PS3, the PS4 has to be sold has more than just a gaming console, which it will be. I'm excited to see how Sony intends to integrate Android and the NGP with it.
Hopefully we'll get a tease at E3. They have a 5-hour conference planned right?
I'm sure they've been thinking about it since the beginning of the PS3 cycle...
I see they've learned their lesson, that there's a problem with upping costs in this sort of economy. Especially if they expect people to go portable and they want to lure back anyone who may be leery after that hacking crap.
