The lights are on
During a conference call to investors, Sony executive VP and CFO Masaru Kato said that "our development work is already under way" for a "future platform."
Kato was responding to a question about Sony's increased research and development costs. The quote in full reads:
“For the home equipment the PS3 still has a product life, but this is a platform business, so for the future platform – when we’ll be introducing what product I cannot discuss that – but our development work is already under way, so the costs are incurred there," Kato said.
He claims that Sony is taking a more economical approach with the next console: “It is no longer thinkable to have a huge initial financial investment like that of the PS3.”

If the next gen does not have virtual reality and Physical hit detection sensors ill pass.
If they only just announced that the PS4 is in development it is likely we won't see the system until 2012 at earliest. I would expect Sony, to center this E3, around the NGP and hear about the PS4 at E3 2012/3 with a release date falling sometime around September-November for obvious reasons. This isn't really big news though considering that developing any console is just like developing a game and usually takes sometime for planning to occur.
eh i dont care i bought all 3 systems this gen and was disapointed with sony a little, completely hated nintendo, and loved 360, i will eventualy own the new xbox and PS4 However ill be going for xbox first
"He claims that Sony is taking a more economical approach with the next console: 'It is no longer thinkable to have a huge initial financial investment like that of the PS3.'” This makes it sound like it won't be as huge a jump in power like the PS2->PS3 was, which isn't a bad thing.
My guess is that this is going to focus not only on modernizing an older system, but incorporating a "focus" and idea that shapes the console. New IP's are welcome, but I barely scratched the surface with the new IP's out now. Being cheaper than the competition and bringing out awesome titles will really help the PS4 in the long run.
Simple formula for success. Great exterior design, significant internal upgrade, a community orientated XMB with customization and better accessibility, boom.
Well, as long as the PS4 is an excellent and affordable system that builds upon the strengths of the PS3, I'll be more than happy to buy it. I can't remember when the PS3 launched, but I'm assuming at least four to five years are left in its lifecycle.
Hopefully, the first version is the slim version.... I doubt it.
should've seen that coming still hoping for a couple more years till its out tho i've only had my ps3 since right b4 slim was out like a week before -_-
Eh, we all assumed they start working on their next console the moment the release their current console. Hearing them admit it is alway's nice though. Hopefully it releases with a lower price tag. :)
This news really isn't all that surprising, but still nice to have confirmed.
I don't like the idea as much as I should. I don't like the idea of having to spend a few hundred dollars in one month on one thing
cool looking forward to it :)
Looking forward to it :) I wonder what it is going to offer....
However, my PS3 died couple weeks ago and now I need a new one :l :l
