The lights are on
During a conference call to investors, Sony executive VP and CFO Masaru Kato said that "our development work is already under way" for a "future platform."
Kato was responding to a question about Sony's increased research and development costs. The quote in full reads:
“For the home equipment the PS3 still has a product life, but this is a platform business, so for the future platform – when we’ll be introducing what product I cannot discuss that – but our development work is already under way, so the costs are incurred there," Kato said.
He claims that Sony is taking a more economical approach with the next console: “It is no longer thinkable to have a huge initial financial investment like that of the PS3.”

Sony's working on their next console?! *Gasp* How could anyone have seen this coming?!
Cool; but now to play online I have to spend NGP money? Ps3 is an online system, why not just make updates to software?
Hope it´s not ps4, or if it is I hope they still make ps3 games.
i think the cell processor is definitely a winner and instead of redoing the platform i think it might be wiser to just upgrade the current base idea. a beefier graphics card or something that is easier to work with and more RAM (if they continue to do a web browser/entertainment pc type of thing). otherwise i feel they have an excellent foundation and a powerful machine. if it is a new console, i wouldnt expect anything for at least 2 years.
