Sony Admits To Working On Its Next Console

During a conference call to investors, Sony executive VP and CFO Masaru Kato said that "our development work is already under way" for a "future platform."

Kato was responding to a question about Sony's increased research and development costs. The quote in full reads:

“For the home equipment the PS3 still has a product life, but this is a platform business, so for the future platform – when we’ll be introducing what product I cannot discuss that – but our development work is already under way, so the costs are incurred there," Kato said.

He claims that Sony is taking a more economical approach with the next console: “It is no longer thinkable to have a huge initial financial investment like that of the PS3.”

  • hopefully they dont charge a ***-ton for it then realize most gamers arnt rich.
  • I knew It! great, the console revolution is upon us. Nooooooo!
  • PS4 incoming!
  • Cool! just give me five years to save up some cash lol
  • Finally, a smart financial move from Sony! Haven't seen one since PS2.
  • So basically all they did was confirm what we already knew?
  • Mod
"For the home equipment the PS3 still has a product life, but this is a platform business ..." i.e. as a game console, it's finished. ps3, we hardly knew you ...
  • Sony's working on their next console?! *Gasp* How could anyone have seen this coming?!

  • Cool; but now to play online I have to spend NGP money? Ps3 is an online system, why not just make updates to software?

  • Is Ps3 going to have future support after the new Ps comes out? Like PS2.
  • Watch it not play PS3 games, just like how the PS3 don't play PS2 games, and yet still play PSP games somehow...yes I said PSP lol. I hope that thing will be FULLY backwards compatible, I don't want to have a bunch of playstation systems sitting in my house when I can play them all in one.
  • Hope it´s not ps4, or if it is I hope they still make ps3 games.

  • All what's left is Microsoft. I wonder what they have in store.
  • and nintendo's potential lead is now vaporized
  • NEWS FLASH: Research and development for the "next" iteration of pretty much ANYTHING is already being worked on AT THE SAME TIME as the "current" iteration.
  • i think the cell processor is definitely a winner and instead of redoing the platform i think it might be wiser to just upgrade the current base idea. a beefier graphics card or something that is easier to work with and more RAM (if they continue to do a web browser/entertainment pc type of thing). otherwise i feel they have an excellent foundation and a powerful machine. if it is a new console, i wouldnt expect anything for at least 2 years.

  • was waiting for this news as i understood the best fix for this entire debacle is furthing and speeding up release of the PS4 is the best way to go.
  • This left a sour taste in my mouth. The PS3 has barely been around for half the lifespan of the PS2 and still has so much genre and graphical potential. But now, a new system already? Maybe Sony should pay closer attention to better integrating and reinforcing their current systems (PS3, PSP, PS2) and really opening up all the capabilities.

They should be careful and pace themselves--really take their sweet time in development to avoid flooding the console market.

EDIT: Especially after announcing their gaming tablets several weeks ago. There can indeed be too much of a good thing.
  • No doubt. Bring on the 8th generation baby!
