Codemasters' Website Hacked

by Matthew Kato on May 26, 2011 at 04:16 AM

The website of Codemasters – U.K. publisher/developer of Dirt 3 – got hacked, but the company says that the problem was fixed and the site was back up in short order.

"On Friday 20th, there was an attempt to gain administrative access to the Codemasters.com website," a Codemasters representative told GamesIndustry.biz. "This admin access may have allowed alterations to our company website."

The company says it took down the site for a few hours, fixed the issue that allowed the hacker to get some staff admin names (although the passwords were encrypted), and then put the site back up.

In this case, it's good that no real damage was done, but obviously with Sony and Square Enix having suffered recent cyberattacks, it looks like everyone needs to be on their guard. In fact, Codemasters itself has suffered collateral damage from the Sony attack after it was discovered that not being able to access the Sony store has meant that PlayStation 3 owners of Dirt 3 weren't able to redeem the game's online pass.
