The lights are on
Hot on the heels of the releases of SOCOM 4: U.S. Navy Seals and MAG, Sony has confirmed that developer Zipper Interactive has cut a portion of its staff.
Sony confirmed the layoffs to Gamasutra, describing it as "normal business practice and a result of cutting back on production resources after the launch of two major franchises." Sony wouldn't confirm how many employees had been fired, but Gamasutra's sources put the number at 30 or more. Whether or not such layoffs have become normal business practice, the news is unfortunate, but Sony says the Zipper will continue to support the games it has already released, and will continue creating new games in the future.
The news comes roughly a month after word that SOCOM 4's lead designer Travis Steiner left Zipper to start a new company.

always sad to hear that layoffs happen.......hope whoever got laid off can find another job/career and be able to support themselves and their families
So it goes. I'm quite satisfied with SOCOM at any rate.
Agent is happy with that image, has a lot of excitement in seeing this, more than a shame that the graphics are not so

My understanding is that when devs start on a big project they hire more workers/programmers and designers as contract workers for that specific game. The contractors are aware that they won't be used after the game release. While I'm not in the industry "normal business practice..." is what is see that leads me to believe this is the case.
Same thing happened after Read Dead Redemption came out, Rockstar laid off about 40 people: xbox360.ign.com/.../1106234p1.html.
no one is safe
Socom 4 sucked but MAG is amazing! They need to release more patches and packs for MAG instead of Socom
The people that were laid off probably went with steiner
Layoffs are bitter sweet. A smaller studio means less work productivity, sometimes.
While those gone have new opportunities.
I've play MAG since two months after the game came back, there were rumors that Zipper was going to make MAG 2... They were exactly that, RUMORS... This sucks. I really wanted some improvements in the game. I'm going to trade the game in, sadly and make a new home in Battlefield 3.
It is hard to hear stories like this. People who have been part of the series for so long are suffering in many ways. Not just a loss of job but also the fact that you will not be part of the industry anymore. Thank you to the staff who has made previous games.
I know its late and this old but honestly after letting the community down and not listening to the fans what would you expect. The Socom franchise has the potential to be sony's "Halo" but with each new game they push that dream further and further down the drain. Look at codmw they have kept the same formula/gameplay and have been very sucessfull.
Just revamp socom2 graphics and bring back p2talk and the awesome lobby system in previous games and the dollars will follow. After having playing every single socom title even the mobile game its a shame to feel like this.
